MARIETTA, Ohio — Five different Pioneers scored in double figures as the Marietta College men's basketball team opened the season with an easy 100-82 win over Westminster College Friday (Nov. 13) in Ban Johnson Arena. The Pioneers took advantage of the Titans' generosity scoring 38 points off Westminster turnovers.

Marietta scored first and never trailed in the game. Westminster managed a pair of early ties but faced a double-digit deficit for most of the game. Eddy Grenert hit one of two free throws with 2:40 left in the first half to give MC a 19-point lead, 51-32. The Pioneers led 54-39 at the break.

Marietta gradually extended its lead in the second half. A layup from A.J. Edwards with 7:12 left in the game gave the Pioneers their biggest lead of the game, 89-61. Freshman Seth Lagraen put MC at the century mark with a free throw in the finals seconds of the game.

Edwards and Grenert each notched a double-double. Edwards scored 18 points and grabbed 11 boards, while Grenert finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Edwards also blocked two Titan shots and Grenert dished out a team-high four assists.

Luis Garcis sank five three-pointers to lead all scorers with 19 points. Brennan McKean scored 12 points in his first game back after missing last season with a knee injury. A.J. Ireland chipped in with 11 points.

Marietta shot 45.3% (34-of-75) from the floor, 37.1% (13-of-35) behind the arc and 73.1% (19-of-26) at the free throw line. Westminster was 30-of-62 (48.4%) from the floor, 8-of-22 (36.4%) from three-point range and 14-of-22 (63.6%) at the line.

Westminster committed 24 turnovers, while the Pioneers turned the ball over 12 times. The battle on the glass was even with both teams pulling down 40 rebounds.

Marietta travels to Bethany College on Tuesday (Nov. 17) for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
