Sewanee edges Berry on the road to close out the regular season, 50-47

ROME, Ga. (Feb. 22, 2015) – Behind 18 points from forward Keshonn Carter, the Sewanee men's basketball team closed out its regular season with a 50-47 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) road win at Berry, Sunday, inside the Cage Center.

The Tigers end the regular season with a 16-9 overall record and 10-4 mark in league play. The Tigers will enter next weekend's SAA Tournament as the No. 3 seed. Sewanee will face No. 6 seeded Hendrix in the opening round. Rival and No. 1 seed Rhodes will host the tournament while Centre finished second in the regular season and will be the No. 2 seed.

The game was close throughout with seven ties and four lead changes. With Berry holding its largest lead of the game, 10 points, with 13:59 left in the first half, Sewanee cameback.

The Tigers opened an 8-2 run after an old fashion three-point play from Brody Stone. That pulled the Tigers to within two, 19-17, with 5:45 left in the half.

Berry would eventually lead by that margin at halftime.

In the second half, Sewanee took control with 8:22 remaining. Back-to-back layups by Carter and Seth Brown pushed the Tiger advantage to four, 41-37. Sewanee would eventually increase its lead to seven, 49-42, after a 6-2 run with under five minutes to play.

However, behind four free throws, Berry pulled to within a possession with 1:11 remaining. Down the stretch, the Tiger defense stayed strong. Sewanee held Berry scoreless the rest of the way before Marcellus Caldwell iced the game with a free throw with one second left.

Overall, Sewanee struggled from the field making only 38.8 percent of its attempts. However, the Tigers limited Berry to a 34.1 field goal percentage and outscored the Vikings 26-14 in the paint.

Along with Carter, Stone played well with nine points and eight rebounds.

Lee McCloud and Tyler Harville led Berry with 11 points each.
