The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's basketball team had its 18-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday, as the Cardinals suffered a 60-59 loss at Alfred University.
With the loss Fisher falls to 20-3 overall and 13-1 in Empire 8 play, while Alfred moves to 16-7, 9-5.
Fisher, ranked 16th in the D3hoops.com national poll, suffered its first loss since December 5th. The loss snaps the third-longest winning streak in the program's 52-year history.
Fisher already clinched the No. 1 seed for the Empire 8 Conference Championship and will host the four-team tournament on February 27-28.
Alfred's Dalton Walsh made one of two free throws with 3.2 seconds to break a tie at 59 for the final point of the game.
Fisher, who trailed by six points at 59-53 with 1:55 remaining in regulation, tied the game with just under 20 seconds left, but couldn't win the game at the buzzer on its ensuing possession.
The Saxons held a five point lead on two separate occasions in the first half, however it was the Cardinals who held a 29-29 lead at the break.
The home team took over the lead at 33-32 early in the second half. Adam Ambielli drilled a 3-pointer to tie the game at 36s but Alfred answered right back with a 3-pointer of its own to take the lead for good at the 15:10 mark.
Trailing 59-53 with under two minutes to play, Fisher erased the six point deficit beginning with two free throws from Chaz Lott. Following a strong defensive stand on the ensuing possession, Stefan Bock used a spin-move to get to the cup to make it a two point game with a minute to play.
Bock came up big on the next Alfred possession, taking a charge to allow for Lott to tie the game at 59 with :18 seconds to play.
For Fisher, Bock led the way with 17 points, while collecting eight rebounds. Keegan Ryan recorded his 10th double-double of the year with 10 points and 12 boards. Ambielli and Tyler Hart each chipped in eight points.
Fisher returns to action at 8 p.m. on Friday at Hartwick College. The Cardinals will then close out the regular season at 3 p.m. on Saturday at Stevens Institute of Technology.
