Hassell Scores Career-High 22 as No. 1 R-MC Topples Shenandoah

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) netted a career-best 22 points on Senior Night as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outscored Shenandoah 103-72 Wednesday evening in ODAC action in Crenshaw Gymnasium to extend its school-record win streak to 19.

Hassell went 9 for 12 from the floor, nailed a three-pointer and added three free throws. He pulled down nine rebounds, had two assists and added two steals.

The Yellow Jackets (22-2, 15-0 ODAC) never trailed in the contest. R-MC sprung to a 14-5 lead in the first six minutes. The Hornets (4-20, 3-12 ODAC) used a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to two at 16-14 with 10:30 left in the half. The Yellow Jackets put together a 27-5 run to take a 43-19 advantage with 1:30 to go in the period. R-MC would take a 47-23 lead to the locker room at the half. Hassell had 16 points and seven boards in the first half.

The lead was never lower than two dozen in the second stanza. A 17-8 spurt in the first four minutes of the second half gave R-MC a 64-31 advantage. The lead grew to as large as 38 at 94-56 with 4:30 remaining before coasting to the 103-72 victory.

The Yellow Jackets shot 56.3% from the floor (40-71) and 50% on three-pointers (10-20). R-MC held a 52-34 advantage on the boards.

Senior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio) hit three three-pointers and a pair of free throws for 11 points, while freshman Rip Engel (New Town, Pa./Life Center Academy) added 11 points and three assists off the bench for the Yellow Jackets. Seniors Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) and Evan Jackson (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) as well as junior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) each had eight points for R-MC.

Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) had nine assists for R-MC, including seven in the second half. He also had three steals.

Aaron Paterson had 15 points for SU.

Randolph-Macon concludes the regular season on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. at Emory & Henry.
