Cortland Men Beat Potsdam, 87-61, in Regular-Season Home Finale

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Lamard Herron (Westbury) scored 15 points as one of three Cortland double-figure scorers and the Red Dragons' men's basketball team defeated visiting Potsdam, 87-61.

Cortland improved to 16-7 overall and is 9-7 in SUNYAC play with two games remaining. The Red Dragons are currently in sixth place in the league, a half game behind Brockport (9-6) and one game ahead of both Oneonta and New Paltz (each 8-8). Cortland plays at Brockport next Tuesday and wraps the regular season Friday at Oswego.

Freshman Shayne Martinez (West Haverstraw/North Rockland) made 6-of-8 shots and finished with 13 points, nine in the first half. Junior T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) added 11 points, including two 3-pointers, and led the Red Dragons with five assists and five rebounds.

Also for the Red Dragons, sophomore Michael Kelly (Monroe/Burke Catholic) and junior Grequan Carter (Queens/Humanities & The Arts) each scored eight points and sophomore Terrernce Felder (Mount Vernon) and freshman Justin Prendergast (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) tallied seven points apiece.

Potsdam (2-19, 1-14 SUNYAC) got 13 points apiece from Tom Graf and Zac Adams. Graf hit 3-of-6 shots from 3-point range. Adams and Rishawd Hendricks led the team with five rebounds each.

Cortland committed only six turnovers, its second-lowest total of the season, compared to 20 giveaways by the Bears. Potsdam shot 52 percent from the field in the first half but had 12 turnovers and allowed nine offensive rebounds and trailed 46-29 at halftime. The Bears finished at 49 percent from the field compared to 46 percent for Cortland. The Red Dragons, however, outscored Potsdam 17-3 on the foul line and made 10 3-pointers to Potsdam's six.

Cortland extended its lead to 55-35 less than four minutes into the second half and led by at least 24 points over the game's final 13 minutes.

Following the game, Cortland honored its two seniors – Herron and Matt McGowan (Lake George) – who played in their final regular-season home contest.
