Jaumonee Byrd and Christian Ford both joined the 1,000-point club on Saturday afternoon, as the Orange and Garnet defeated Huntingdon College, 97-71, behind some historic marks.
Maryville College seniors – Spencer Peake, Oscar Butler and Ford – celebrated their Senior Day with the 26-point victory, spurred by junior teammate Spencer Shoffner. Maryville's long-range specialist knocked down 34 points in the game, while he and the Scots each set MC records over the Hawks.
Career Marks
Byrd and Ford become the 27th and 28th players to reach the 1,000-point club at Maryville College on Saturday afternoon.
Ford, a 6-foot-1 senior guard, posted two treys within the final 5 minutes, after coming into the day bearing 992 career points. Ford's second long-range shot – 5 feet behind the 3-point line – swished through to reach the feat.
The senior finished the day with 1,000 points exactly with at least three games left in his career at Maryville College. He tallied six assists, one steal and two rebounds during the contest.
Coming into the day, the reigning USA South Player of the Year, Byrd, had 999 points and 496 rebounds. The junior tallied his 1,000th point at the 17:58 mark. Byrd snagged a rebound, with a hook shot in the paint to include his name in the 1,000-point club.
Byrd shot 5-of-6 from the floor, while converting each of his five free-throw attempts. He also had nine rebounds for a near double-double, to go with two assists and three blocks.
With 15:25 left in the first stanza, Byrd found his second career mark of the game. The 6-foot-6 post pulled down his 500th rebound, making him the first player to eclipse the 1,000-point and 500-rebound plateau since 2010.
The last player to reach both career marks is current Maryville assistant coach, Greg Hernandez, who finished his MC career with 1,129 points and 581 rebounds. Post player Bobby Golden (2003-07) did it before Hernandez, bucketing 1,458 points and 672 rebounds.
Shoffner, a junior, broke Maryville College's 3-point field goal record on Saturday evening – a record that had stood for 26 years.
The wing posted a career-high 34 points, while boasting a 62.5 percent clip from beyond the arc. Shoffner connected on 10-of-16 treys, while shooting 11-of-20 (55 percent) from the floor on the day. He also converted 2-of-2 free throws.
Shoffner's 10-trey day bested Jesse Robinette's record from Feb. 20, 1989. The former Scot posted nine treys against Warren Wilson College. Shoffner broke Robinette's record with a long trey at the 4:16 mark of the second half.
The junior's 34-point outing eclipses his previous best of 28 points from exactly three months ago, toppling his 28-point day on Dec. 14, 2014 against the Birmingham-Southern Panthers.
He also tallied seven rebounds, four assists, three blocks and two steals on his historic night.
Scots tie school record
Maryville College would tie the single-game record for most 3-pointers in a contest over Huntingdon College behind Shoffner's 10. The Scots posted a 41.5 percent outing from beyond the arc, tying the record with 17 made treys.
Three other times in the school's history, have the Scots boasted a 17-trey day. The Scots did it against Averett on Feb. 17, 2013. MC's also accomplished the total against Warren Wilson College (Feb. 20, 1989) and Johnson Bible College (Nov. 29, 1988).
The Scots jumped out early behind quick shooting, going ahead 14-0 through the first 3:54 of play. Treys by Shoffner and Peake set the tone, but the Hawks would fight back. Huntingdon put together a 12-2 run – all 3-point shots – before a Calvin Songster long ball would end the streak, 19-12.
Maryville would continue to pour in the baskets, as they took a 51-30 lead into the break behind 54.5 percent (18-of-33) shooting. The Scots would convert nine treys in the first half, while bucketing 47.4 percent from long range.
The barrage would continue in the second half, as Maryville would finish shooting 50.7 percent on the afternoon in the 97-71 victory.
Behind Shoffner's 34 points and Byrd's 15, Songster had 13 to go with four assists. Butler tallied nine points on Senior Day, while pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds. He also had six assists, a block and a steal.
Ford posted eight points, while Logan Brewer added seven with a huge dunk at the end of the first half. Peake and Tyler Spicer each tallied five points, while Cody Vance added one.
Maryville outrebounded the Hawks, 52-30 on the day.
Huntingdon was led by R.J. Jones' 18 points, while Raheem Berry added 13. Andre Ashley tallied 11.
In the game, both teams combined for 26 3-pointers.
Maryville moves to 11-11 on the season, while going 6-5 in USA South action. The Hawks fall to 3-19, 2-9 in conference play.
The Scots will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, as they host LaGrange. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
