ELMIRA, NY – Host Elmira hit 16 three-pointers to help down Hartwick's men's basketball team on Saturday at Speidel Gymnasium by a final score of 80-65. The loss ends the Hawks' six-game unbeaten streak and drops their record to 14-9 overall and 9-5 in the Empire 8. Despite the loss, the Hawks remain alone in second place in the Empire 8 standings thanks to Stevens' overtime win over Ithaca today.
Joey Lufkin (Argyle, NY/Argyle) registered team-highs of 19 points and three three-pointers for the Hawks. Trevor Norton (Mullica Hill, NJ/Ursinus College) contributed 17 points and tied for a game-high with eight rebounds. Jake Sinicki (Endicott, NY/Maine-Endwell) was also in double figures with 13 points. He pulled down seven rebounds.
The Soaring Eagles were paced by Neil Randolph's 24 points and six three-pointers. Oladapo Badmos added 15 points and Hayden Harkins netted 12, including four treys.
Following a layup from Lufkin with 11:22 remaining in the first half of play, Hartwick closed an Elmira lead to two points, 16-14. The Hawks, however, would go scoreless for nearly eight minutes as EC went on a 15-0 run to open up a 17-point advantage, 31-14. A jumper from Sinicki at 3:52 broke the scoreless streak, and a Norton three-pointer closed the gap to 14 at halftime, 37-23.
The Elmira lead grew to as many as 19 points three times in the opening three and a half minutes of the second half. Hartwick would stay in the contest, and with an 8-0 rally, would trim the deficit to 10 points, 59-49, with 9:16 left. After trading buckets, a Tyler Dibble layup followed by a Randolph three with 5:10 left made it a 15-point margin for EC and the Soaring Eagles didn't lead by any less than 12 until the 1:16 mark in the win.
Justin Pratt (North Kingstown, RI/North Kingtown) contributed eight points and five rebounds for Hartwick on the day. Matt Wilson (Shelton, CT/Franklin & Marshall College) also added eight points.
The Hawks shot 39.6% (21-for-53) for the game. They made only six three-pointers on 19 attempts (31.6%). The Soaring Eagles made 44.3% (27-for-61) as a team from the floor and they out-rebounded the Hawks by a margin of 37-30.
Hartwick closes out the regular season next weekend at Lambros Arena. The Hawks host St. John Fisher on Friday. The Cardinals, who remain unbeaten in the E8 at 13-0, have already secured the top seed and right to host the conference playoffs in two weeks.
