GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy defeated Immaculata, 86-58, in a big CSAC matchup at the Griffin Complex, as the Griffins honored their seniors Saturday afternoon.
Prior to the contest, the team took time to recognize and honor its two seniors, Justin Knight and Seth Heinicke. Former Griffin, Colin Gates, was also honored.
Five players recorded double-digits for Gwynedd, led by junior Darnell Artis who tied a season-high with 21 points. Junior Brian Hennessey added 14, sophomore Larry Jones III chipped in a career-high 13, while Heinicke added 12 and sophomore Cedric Elleby with 10.
Tensions ran high in a physical first half as the Griffins (16-7, 11-5 CSAC) and Mighty Macs battled to control the pace of the game. Evenly matched for majority of the half, GM slowly pulled away with a 7-0 run capped by two Heinicke free throws to lead by as many as 12 (37-25). However, IU used a three-pointer by Matt Simon with 1:08 remaining cut it back to six, but junior Julian Hyden was quick to answer with a three of his own to close out the stanza and give the Griffins a 40-31 edge going into the break.
GM, who won their third in a row and seventh of their last eight, went 12-of-27 (44.4%) from the floor and 12-of-14 (85.7%) from the charity stripe in the period while IU was 11-for-30 (36.7%) and just 5-of-11 (45.5%) from the line in the half. Gwynedd scored 17 points off of 10 Mighty Mac turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
The Griffins kicked their game into full gear opening up the second half with two steals resulting in easy buckets and the largest lead of the game thus far of 15 points. IU was unable to battle back and break the double-digit deficit for the remainder of the game. Gwynedd would shoot over 50% in the period and connect on 5-of-8 from downtown. Back-to-back threes by Artis with less than seven minutes remaining pushed GM back to a 20-point cushion where they would cruise to the victory.
Simon led the way for the Mighty Macs (10-13, 8-8 CSAC), who dropped their fourth in a row, with 16 points off the bench and Mamadou Diakite and Roy Ferrell Jr. both added 10 apiece. Diakite pulled down a team-high nine boards.
Overall GM was 28-of-58 (48.3%) from the field and 9-of-22 (40.9%) from behind the arc. At the free throw line, the team was 21-of-26. IU finished a shade over 35%, going 19-of-53 from the floor.
The Griffins are back in action on Monday as they travel to Neumann University for an 8 p.m. tip-off. With a win, GM can keep pace en route to the top playoff seed and a first-round bye.
