Men’s Basketball Races Past Fredonia 105-77

BUFFALO, NY – Chris Cartwright (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) recorded his first double-double of the season, tallying 17 points and dishing out 10 assists to help lead Buffalo State (14-8, 10-6 SUNYAC) past Fredonia (2-20, 1-15 SUNYAC) on Friday evening at Sports Arena for Senior Night.

The Bengals honored their five seniors, Roderick Epps (Uniondale, NY/Uniondale), Justin Best (Sleepy Hollow, NY/Sleepy Hollow), Chris Thompson (Far Rockaway, NY/Channel View), Larry Rivers (Syracuse, NY/Fowler) and Cartwright in their final regular season home game of their careers.

Lovell Smith (Buffalo, NY/McKinley) led the way offensively for Buffalo State with 20 points and a team-high four steals. Epps added 16 points, five assists and three steals, while Rivers rounded out double-digit scoring with 10 points. Thompson pulled down a team-high eight boards and chipped in seven points. Best recorded a career-best nine points.

Epps started the game off quickly for the Bengals, draining a 3-pointer in the first 22 seconds. Buffalo State continued to push the pace of the game. Cartwright got hot from long range, hitting three-straight 3-pointers to take a 15 point lead at 12:27 and the Bengals never looked back. Strong shooting throughout the half helped Buffalo State maintain control and take a 60-33 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Buffalo State pushed out to its largest lead with 8:34 to play, going up 87-55. The closest the Blue Devils would come was 28 points, 105-77, in the final 42 seconds of the game.

The Bengals finished the game shooting 48.8 percent from the floor, 36 percent from behind the arc and 84.2 percent from the charity stripe. Buffalo State tallied 46 points from the bench and held a 48-40 advantage in total rebounds.

With the victory, the Bengals earn a point in the season long all-sports "Battle by the Lake" competition between Buffalo State and Fredonia.

Buffalo State returns to action at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at New Paltz for the final weekend of SUNYAC play.
