ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) recorded a career-best 14 assists as the fourth-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team handled Hampden-Sydney 79-65 Wednesday evening in ODAC action in front of a sellout crowd of 1,522 in Crenshaw Gymnasium to set a program record with 17 consecutive victories.
The Yellow Jackets (20-2, 13-0) registered their eighth straight 20-win season and six in a row under head coach Nathan Davis.
With Virginia Wesleyan's 87-75 loss at Eastern Mennonite, Randolph-Macon clinched the ODAC regular-season title and will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming ODAC Tournament.
The Tigers (14-8, 7-6) took a quick 4-1 lead before R-MC scored 11 straight to take a 12-4 lead with 15:30 left in the period. The lead grew to 13 at 27-14 with nine minutes to go in the half. The margin was cut to seven at 29-22 before the Yellow Jackets took a 39-29 advantage to the locker room at the break. Freshman Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) hit five three-pointers in the first half for 15 points. Badger had seven assists in the period.
H-SC cut the lead to five at 40-35 with 17:30 remaining before R-MC scored nine straight to push its advantage to 14 at 49-35 with 14:25 left. The lead stayed in double figures over the final 12:45. The margin ballooned to 17 at 59-42 with 10:45 to go and hit 17 two more times before the Yellow Jackets posted the 79-65 victory.
Silverthorn led all scorers with a career-high 20 points. He went 7 for 11 from the floor and 6 for 9 behind the arc. Senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) recorded his second straight double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. It was his fifth double-double of the season. Senior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) hit four three-pointers and four free throws for 16 points.
Mike Murray had 18 points off the bench for the Tigers.
Randolph-Macon hits the road for a 2 p.m. ODAC contest on Saturday, Feb. 14 at Randolph.
