Oneonta Men Edge Host Cortland, 72-67

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Zach Mager scored 19 points and Frankie Kelly tallied 13 points, including five straight points during a crucial stretch in the final two minutes, as Oneonta edged Cortland, 72-67, in a SUNYAC men's basketball contest.

Oneonta (11-10 overall) and Cortland (15-6 overall) are now among a three-way tie for fifth place in the SUNYAC standings with 8-6 league records and four conference games remaining. The top six teams qualify for the SUNYAC tournament.

Mager scored 13 of his 19 points in the second half. Kelly led Oneonta with six assists, while Lawrence Coleman scored 11 points and tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Mikey McElroy chipped in with nine points, six boards and three assists.

Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) led Cortland with 15 points and Justin Prendergast (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) finished with 14 points and career highs of 10 rebounds and three assists, along with two blocks. Shayne Martinez (West Haverstraw/North Rockland) added 10 points and five rebounds.

Cortland led by as many as 11 points in the first half and by 10 points, 36-26, with 3:58 left in the first half. Oneonta, however, scored the final seven points of the half and took the lead 59 seconds into the second half, 37-36, on a Kelly layup.

The teams were tied seven times in the second half, the last at 63-63 on a Mager layup with 2:29 left. Cortland missed a shot on its next possession and Kelly hit a layup with 1:46 remaining to put Oneonta ahead for good.

Cortland couldn't connect on two shots on its next trip down the floor. Kelly responded with a layup that hung on the rim before eventually dropping through with 40 seconds left and was fouled on the play. His free throw gave Oneonta a 68-63 lead.

The hosts turned the ball over on their next possession and Mager made one free throw with 30 seconds remaining. Cortland got back to within four twice in the last 21 seconds but was unable to reduce the deficit any lower.

Cortland will host Plattsburgh Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Potsdam Saturday at 2 p.m. in its final regular-season home games.
