Brooklyn Falters in Second Half; Drops 80-71 Decision at York

Jamaica, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team saw its halftime lead diminish in the second half, as the York College Cardinals completed its come-back win, 80-71, on Tuesday night in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) action.

With the loss, BC falls to 17-5 overall on the year and 9-4 in the CUNYAC; while York improves to 12-8 overall and 7-4 in league play. The teams have split the regular season series with each team winning on their home court, as the Bulldogs defeated the Cardinals, 75-63, back on January 6th at the West Quad Center.

Lorenzo Williams led Brooklyn with 15 points, while Egzon Gjonbalaj finished with 14 points. Jai Kellman was the third scorer in double figures for the visitors with 12 points. Valon Djombalic pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds, to go with nine points, just missing out on a double-double.

York had four starters score in double figures, led by Franklin Green's game-high 20 points. Du'Quan Lawson added 18 points, seven assists and five rebounds, while Jaron Williams chipped in with 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Cyril Reid finished the night with 15 points, rebounds and four blocks.

The Cardinals opened the game scoring the first five points of the contest and would eventually take an eight-point lead, 19-11, at the 14:53 mark of the first half. The deficit would not last long; however, as the Bulldogs would answer with a 13-0 run to take a five-point lead, 24-19, with 11:08 left in the half. Brooklyn would never trail again in the period, as the Bulldogs would take a nine-point, 40-31, halftime advantage.

The second half would see the teams combine for four ties and three lead changes. Following a three-pointer from Jamel Gist to keep Brooklyn ahead, 50-43, with 14:01 left in the game, the Cardinals would go on an 11-2 run regain the lead at 54-52 with 11:10 remaining on the clock.

The teams would exchange baskets over the next five minutes. Following a layup from Gjonbalaj that put Brooklyn back ahead by two, 60-58, with 6:10 left in the game, the Cardinals made one final push to go ahead for good, using an 11-0 run to take a 69-60 lead, with 2:25 remaining in the game.

Brooklyn would be unable to recover from its scoring drought, as the Cardinals would hit key free throws down the stretch to take home its 80-71 victory.

For the game, BC shot 45.2% (28-for-62) from the field, including 25% (7-for-28) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also shot 66.7% (8-for-12) from the line.

York shot 52.8% (28-for-53) from the field, including 47.8% (11-for-23) from three. The Cardinals shot 59.1% (13-for-22) from the charity stripe.

Brooklyn will return to action this Friday, February 6th, as the Bulldogs will travel to Hunter College to take on the Hawks in a key CUNYAC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 pm. The Bulldogs will look to stay in the hunt for home court advantage for the quarterfinals round of the conference championships by sweeping the season series over the Hawks. Brooklyn defeated Hunter, 75-58, back on January 14th at the West Quad Center.
