Oneonta Men Pull Away to Defeat Cortland

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Zach Mager scored 33 points and Mikey McElroy added 24 points as Oneonta pulled away in the second half to defeat visiting Cortland, 89-68, in a SUNYAC contest.

Mager finished 10-of-17 from the floor, 4-of-8 from 3-point range, and grabbed seven rebounds. McElroy hit 10-of-15 shots, including both of his 3-pointers, and added seven rebounds and four steals.

Also for Oneonta (8-8, 5-4 SUNYAC), Lawrence Coleman chipped in with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting, Frankie Kelly handed out six assists and Kareem Williams led the team with eight rebounds.

Cortland (12-4, 5-4 SUNYAC), which had a four-game winning streak snapped, was paced by Blair Estarfaa's (Buffalo/Maryvale) 20 points. He hit 5-of-9 from long distance. Justin Prendergast (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) made 5-of-6 shots in a 13-point effort and Lamard Herron (Westbury) scored 11 points.

Oneonta shot 59 percent in the second half and 57 percent for the game. The hosts also hit 7-of-16 3-pointers (44 percent) and 18-of-21 free throws (86 percent). Cortland finished at 43 percent from the field, 8-of-24 from 3-point land (33 percent) and 8-of-10 from the line.

Cortland led 27-22 after a Prendergast 3-point play with 6:25 left in the first half and held a 34-29 advantage at the 3:21 mark following a Prendergast layup. Oneonta finished the half on a 9-3 run, capped by two Mager free throws, and led 38-37 at the break.

The game was tied for the 10th time at 44-44 with 17:49 left before Mager made three 3-pointers during an ensuing 12-2 run that put Oneonta up 56-46 with 15:33 left. Cortland cut the deficit to six a couple of minutes later but got no closer. Oneonta led 74-65 with 4:49 remaining and finished the game on a 15-3 streak.

Cortland plays at New Paltz Saturday at 2 p.m.
