Hassell Scores 13 to Help No. 11 R-MC Top Emory & Henry 69-53

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) recorded 13 points and grabbed four rebounds as the 11th-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated Emory & Henry 69-53 Saturday afternoon in ODAC action at Crenshaw Gymnasium to extend its win streak to 12.

The first-place Yellow Jackets (15-2, 8-0 ODAC) sprinted out to a 16-7 lead in the game's first eight minutes. The lead grew to 10 at 23-13 before R-MC took a 25-15 advantage at intermission. The Yellow Jackets held the Wasps (3-14, 2-6 ODAC) to 20% shooting from the floor (6 for 30) and 0 for 10 on three-pointers.

R-MC started the second half on an 11-6 run to take a 15-point lead at 36-21 with 14:25 remaining. E&H scored 12 straight to cut the deficit to three at 36-33. The Yellow Jackets used a 22-7 run to extend their lead to 18 at 58-40 with six minutes left. The margin grew to at least 22 (66-44) before R-MC registered the 69-53 victory.

Freshman Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) hit four three-pointers for 12 points, while sophomore Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) buried three treys and finished with 11 points and five boards for the Yellow Jackets.

Myles Turner tallied 22 points for the Wasps.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 28 with a 7 p.m. ODAC contest at Bridgewater.
