Slow Start Dooms Hornets at No. 6 Virginia Wesleyan
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Lynchburg College men's basketball team was outscored in the first half 40-19 en route to a 78-55 loss the No. 6 Virginia Wesleyan College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action Saturday afternoon.
The Marlins scored the first four points of the contest as Kaelin Poe and Greg Montgomery scored inside early on.
Lynchburg responded by scoring the next 12 points to take a 12-4 with 14:47 remaining. Omar Kemp started the run with a layup and capped it off with a free throw. Zack Burnett, Daniel Rowe, Alex Graves and Lyndon White all scored in the balanced run that lasted just under three minutes.
Virginia Wesleyan responded as Montgomery and Khory Moore combined to score eight points and tie the contest up at 12 with 10:46 to play in the first. After trailing 12-4, Wesleyan got hot from behind the arc and closed the first half on a 36-7 run.
The Marlins made six threes in the first half while shooting 46.2% from deep and 45.2% overall as opposed to a 22.9% overall showing by the Hornets.
Lynchburg managed to hang with Virginia Wesleyan in the second half, but could not climb out of the early deficit.
Graves led the Hornets with 14 points to go along with 11 boards for his fourth double-double of the season while contributing a team-high three assists.
Moore finished with 17 points for Virginia Wesleyan (14-3/6-2 ODAC) while collecting four assists and four steals, all of which came in the first half. Montgomery added 16 points while Tim Jones contributed 14.
Lynchburg (10-7/3-5) travels to Roanoke (6-10/1-6) Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ODAC start.
