CONWAY, Ark. (Jan. 23, 2015) – Behind a career-high 27 points from Southern Athletic Association (SAA) leading scorer Jorden Williams, the Sewanee men's basketball team rallied in the second half for a key 62-59 win at league foe Hendrix, Friday, inside Grove Gymnasium.
Williams, who came into the game leading the league in points at 17.3 points per game, scored 21 points in the second half. In fact, Williams netted 17 points over the final eight minutes of the game. At the time, Hendrix led by 10, 53-43.
With the victory, Sewanee improved to 10-6 overall. The Tigers also stay around the top of the SAA standings with a 4-1 league record. Since the start of January, Sewanee is 5-2.
After Hendrix led by six, 36-30, at halftime, the Warriors continued to play well early in the second half.
After Brody Stone made a layup for the Tigers, Hendrix responded with a strong offensive run. A layup by Luke Vance sparked an 8-2 run by the orange and white.
Williams's jumper with 11:00 to play cut the Tiger deficit back to single digits at 51-43. However, a layup by Alec Conard pushed the Hendrix advantage back to 10.
From that point, Williams took over. A three by the Chattanooga, Tenn., native opened a 14-5 run by the Tigers. During the stretch, Williams nailed four three pointers.
With 1:43 left, Williams hit another three to give the Tigers their first lead at 60-58. With 33 seconds left, Vance trimmed the Hendrix deficit back to one. However, it was Williams again that came up big.
After grabbing the defensive rebound on Vance's second free throw attempt, the sophomore guard made both of his free throws with 20 seconds remaining.
Hendrix did attempt two late threes, however Sewanee's lock down defense held the Warriors scoreless.
Along with his points, Williams grabbed six rebounds, dished out two assists, and also added a key second-half steal. Stone also played well with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Vance paced Hendrix with 17 points and five boards.
Sewanee continues its SAA road trip with an important 3:00 p.m. contest at rival Rhodes, Sunday. After defeating Centre on Friday, the Lynx are 12-3 overall and a perfect 5-0 in conference action.
