Claremont, Calif. - Senior guard Michael Cohen scored 21 points in his first game since Dec. 13, including five three-pointers and 4-4 on pressure free throws down the stretch, as the Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team overcame a slow start and captured a 54-52 over Redlands on Tuesday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Cohen and fellow senior guard Joe Eyen both saw their first action since Dec. 13 after missing five weeks with injuries, helping the Sagehens snap an 11-game losing streak and improve to 3-12 overall and 1-5 in the SCIAC (Pomona-Pitzer was still without five other players with injuries, including starting forward Gibson Farone-Collins). Redlands falls to 5-9 overall and 2-3 in league play.
Pomona-Pitzer won despite shooting just 3-20 from the floor in the first half, heading into the locker room down 25-18. After the break, took the Sagehens just 1:08 to match their field goal output from the opening half, as senior guard Kyle McAndrews hit a jumper, Cohen hit a three-pointer and freshman forward Glenn Leininger scored on a layup down low to cut the Redlands lead to 27-25.
A Cohen three-pointer with 16:41 left gave Pomona-Pitzer its first lead of the night at 29-28, and then he added two more three-pointers from well beyond the arc to help stretch the lead to 48-40 with 4:45 to go.
However, Redlands answered with a 7-0 run to close within 48-47 with 3:10 left and had several chances to take the lead, but couldn't convert. Cohen hit two foul shots with 1:25 left to push the lead to 50-47, and after Redlands closed to within 51-49, he hit two more clutch shots with 10.7 seconds left to help put it away.
McAndrews was also in double figures for the Sagehens with 13 points, to go along with a team-high seven rebounds. Aljosa Bjekovic was the only player in double figures for Redlands with 20.
Pomona-Pitzer is back in action on Saturday for the first of its two annual Sixth Street Rivalry games against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, beginning at 7 p.m.
