The No. 2 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team shot over 50 percent from the field and received a vintage performance from its starting point guard Saturday in a 71-64 victory at UW-La Crosse in a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference affair in La Crosse, Wis.

Senior guard Quardell Young led the Warhawks (14-2 overall, 7-0 WIAC) with a career-high 28 points on a perfect 12-of-12 shooting, the fifth perfect shooting game (minimum 10 attempts) in program history.

UW-Whitewater shot 52.9 percent from the field while holding the Eagles (7-9, 2-5) to 38.6 percent from the floor.

Senior wing KJ Evans submitted his second straight double-double and sixth of the season with 19 points and a game- and season-high 13 rebounds. Senior guard Cody Odegaard contributed eight points and five rebounds.

The Warhawks led midway through the first half, 17-10, following consecutive lay-ups by junior wing Xzavier Moananu and senior forward Steve Egan.

UW-La Crosse responded with a 12-2 run to take a 22-19 advantage with 5:42 on the clock. From there, the Eagles increased their lead all the way to nine at the 3:15 mark after back-to-back 3-pointers.

UW-Whitewater tallied seven straight points as Odegaard brought the team to within 32-30 with 39 seconds remaining in the period on a 3-pointer. UW-La Crosse scored on its next possession and entered the half with a 34-30 lead.

In the second, the Eagles boosted their advantage to eight points, but the Warhawks responded quickly, tying the game and eventually taking the lead with a 12-0 run, highlighted by six points from Young. As a result of the spurt, UW-Whitewater led 46-41 with 14:14 left in the contest, and didn't trail the rest of the way.

UW-La Crosse got as close as one point with 2:37 on the clock, but Evans and Young converted consecutive lay-ups, and, following a bucket by the Eagles, Evans knocked down four free throws in the final 32 seconds to ice away the game.

The Warhawks outscored the Eagles 44-18 in the paint and hit 15-of-20 at the free throw line.

Young, who scored 18 of his 28 points in the second half, was also perfect from the field just over a year to the day. He made 10-of-10 from the field for 25 points in a 90-51 triumph over UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 11, 2014.

UW-Whitewater hosts 18th-ranked UW-Stevens Point Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Kachel Gymnasium. If the Pointers defeat UW-River Falls Saturday night, it will be a showdown for first place in the WIAC.
