HIRAM, OHIO -- Junior J.J. Woodson (Cleveland/Bedford) scored a game-high 23 points and junior Ray Gaston (Warren/John F. Kennedy) recorded his first career double-double to lead the Hiram College men's basketball team past Oberlin 80-63 on Saturday.
The Terriers are now 9-6 on the season and 3-5 in the NCAC, while the Yeomen drop to 6-9, 2-6.
Woodson finished the game 10-of-20 from the field and added a career-high five steals.
Gaston finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. His 10 rebounds are a new career-best.
Sophomore Kyle Deckerd (Canton/Canton South) finished with 12 points and senior Josh Edmondson (Euclid/Twinsburg) had 10 points and six rebounds.
Nathan Cohen led a balanced Yeomen attack with 14 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Oberlin jumped out to an early 10-4 lead and built a 29-22 lead with just over six minutes left in the first half.
But Hiram scored the next six points to cut the deficit to one point at 29-28.
Gaston scored five straight points to give the Terriers their first lead of the game, 35-34, with 2:52 left in the first half.
Hiram was able to expand its lead to 42-37 at the break.
In the second half, the Terriers used a early 11-0 run to open up a 57-43 advantage with 14:25 remaining in the game.
A 8-0 run later in the half gave the Terriers their largest lead of the game at 77-57 and put the game away
"I thought we came out a little flat at the start," said head coach Chris Kibler. "The biggest thing was turning up our energy. Once we started playing with a little more energy, we were able to take the lead and seize the momentum."
Hiram shot 31-of-67 (46.3 percent) from the field and went 9-of-10 (90.0 percent) from the charity stripe, while Oberlin was 25-of-50 (50.0 percent) from the field but just 6-of-13 (46.2 percent) in free throws.
The Terriers dominated the rebounding battle, winning it 41-26, including a 17-6 edge on the offensive glass.
Hiram also forced 21 Oberlin turnovers and turned it into 30 points.
The Terriers will now embark on a key three-game road swing, beginning on Wednesday at Dension. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
