DOYLESTOWN (PA) – The Delaware Valley College men's basketball team remained perfect in Freedom Conference play as the Aggies pulled away to a 68-54 victory win over visiting Wilkes University.

 

The victory marked the third straight overall for the Aggies as they improved to a 9-6 on the season, including a 4-0 mark in conference playoff.  The Colonels drop to 2-2 in the league and 7-8 overall.

 

In the first half, the two teams traded baskets before Wilkes went on a 10-1 run, capped by a Mason Gross 3-pointer for a 20-13 advantage with just over 10 minutes on the clock.  Delaware Valley responded with an 8-0 spurt of its own over the next three minutes behind a layup from Manny Ochenje and back-to-back treys from Francis Arnold to take a one-point lead.

 

Then it was the Colonels turn again, as they scored 10 straight points with Cameron Hinkel contributing five, including a fast break layup and a long three, to give Wilkes its largest lead of the game at 30-21 with 3:12 to play in the opening stanza.  However, the Aggies answered once again, scoring 12 of the final 15 points in the half to send the teams to the locker room tied at 33-33.  Barry Brockington and Zach Sly each had five points in that stretch.

 

In the second half, the teams were deadlocked for the seventh time of the afternoon, at 50-50 with 9:32 remaining in regulation.  From there, the Aggies took command as they scored 18 of the final 22 points in the contest.

 

The big run did not happen right away as a Hinkel layup with 8:17 to go kept the Colonels within one. But, that was the last shot from the field that Wilkes would hit on the afternoon as its last two points came on a pair of free throws from Alec Wizar with 1:15 left.

 

Delaware Valley scored 13 consecutive points in-between Hinkel's layup and Wizar's free throws. It began with Zach Sly slicing through the defense for a layup and Sly finding Ochenje for a layup. Ochenje had a put back before Francis Arnold hit a back-breaking 3-pointer in the corner with 2:08 left for a 62-52 lead. Nick Sullivan hit two free throws and a breakaway layup to end the 13-0 spurt. Sly added two free throws after Wizar's two for the 68-54 final.  

 

Delaware Valley scored 13 points off eight turnovers by Wilkesin the second half compared to just four points off of seven Aggie turnovers for the Colonels.  For the game, Delaware Valley shot an impressive 47 percent (24-of-51) from the field while its defense held Wilkes to just 29.9 percent (20-of-67) shooting from the field. The Colonels were 7-for-28 from long range, including a 1-for-13 effort in the second half.

 

Sly led all players with 18 points and five assists while Arnold notched 17 points and nine boards. Ochenje had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds in 29 minutes. Chris Moran added eight points and seven boards in the win.

 

Steve Stravinski led the Colonels with 13 points and seven rebounds while Tyler Jackson and Hinkel scored 11 and 10 points respectively.
