BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore CJ Autry drilled a three-pointer with 1:02 left to break up a tied game, as the University of New England scored the final seven points of the night for a 65-59 Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) men's basketball victory over Gordon College on Thursday (Jan. 15) at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Winning for the fourth time in six contests, the Nor'easters now stand at 5-9 overall, 3-4 in league outings. The Fighting Scots, who had won the last three meetings between the teams, settle back to 6-8 on the year (3-4 CCC).

After Gordon senior Hans Miersma hit a baseline jumper with 2:04 left to put the visitors up one (59-58), UNE first-yearDrew Coveney made the second of two free throws on the ensuing possession to lock things up for a seventh time on the evening.

Big Blue got the ball back when the Fighting Scots missed the front end of a 1-and-1, and Coveney, who corralled the defensive board, tracked down an offensive rebound moments later and found Autry in the right corner for the go-ahead hoop.

An errant shot by Gordon on the other end and Coveney added one more with 26 seconds left to make it 63-59. The Nor'easters sealed it with 0:06 on the clock as sophomore Matt Lettick was fouled making a steal and stepped to the charity stripe to knock down a pair.

UNE had four players in double figures, led by junior Devin Thompson and first-year Evrim Ozkan with 12 points apiece. Ozkan also pulled in a team-high six rebounds. Coveney gathered most of his stats in the 2nd half, finishing with 11 points, six assists, five rebounds, and five steals. Autry contributed eight of his 10 points in the closing stanza.

The hosts, who left 10 freebies at the line (15-of-25) during the match, did manage to produce 25 points off of 22 Gordon turnovers.

The Fighting Scots were paced by senior Jason Dempsey with 15 points, and classmate Craig McFarlane chipped in with 11. Senior Taylor Bajema and first-year Jaren Yang each scored nine points in support. Miersma (8 points) picked up 11 caroms to help his side post a 37-30 margin on the glass, as well as become Gordon's all-time leader in rebounds (871).

At the start of the evening, the Nor'easters built a 16-5 cushion after 10 minutes of action, while holding their opponents to just 2-of-13 shooting and forcing six turnovers.

The Fighting Scots slowly began to work their way back, using the following eight minutes to construct a 21-7 stretch and move in front (26-23).

After one for UNE, Coveney and McFarlane traded triples to give Gordon a 29-27 edge at intermission. Bajema recorded all of his points during the initial period to help his side gain the advantage.

Big Blue faced its largest deficit (45-38) near the midway mark of the final frame, but answered with the next 12 points over a four-minute span to go up 50-45 with 7:15 to play. Ozkan accounted for half of the run.

The CCC schedule continues for both squads on Saturday (3 p.m.), as the Nor'easters are set to host Roger Williams University and the Fighting Scots will entertain Eastern Nazarene College.
