#22 Elmhurst Falls to Carthage 70-68

ELMHURST, Ill. – The Elmhurst men's basketball team suffered its first home loss of the season, falling 70-68 to Carthage College at R.A. Faganel Hall.

Elmhurst, ranked 22nd in the latest D3hoops.com poll,, slipped to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in the CCIW while Carthage moved to 6-8 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Elmhurst and Carthage traded buckets for the start of the opening half before Carthage built a 22-16 lead after a jumper from Erik Valentine. Elmhurst responded with an 11-2 run and built a 27-24 lead after a Brandon Schwebke layup with just less than six minutes to play in the half. Carthage pulled back in front on a Ryan Kase layup with 4:14 left.  A free throw from Will Nixon pulled the Bluejays even at 30-30 with 3:43 left, but Carthage's Ellis Matthews put the Red Men in front with a jumper with 3:06 remaining. Neither team was able to score for the final three minutes of the half and Carthage led 32-30 at the break.

Carthage opened up a seven-point lead early in the second half before Elmhurst slowly chipped away at the lead, pulling in front on a pair of Bryant Ackerman free throws midway through the half.  The two teams traded buckets and leads until Carthage grabbed a 65-61 lead on a three-pointer from Sean Valentine.

Three straight free throws pulled Elmhurst to within a point with four minutes left and a Kyle Wuest layup with 2:54 to go put Elmhurst back in front 66-65. Wuest hit a pair of free throws with 1:39 remaining, extending Elmhurst's lead to three in the process. Donte Logan hit a jumper in the paint and was fouled with 1:02 left on the clock. Logan hit the ensuing free throw to even the score at 68-68. After an Elmhurst turnover, Carthage held for one shot and Brad Kruse hit a driving layup with 3.2 seconds left on the clock. Elmhurst's long pass down court was  knocked out of bounds with .01 seconds remaining and the Bluejays' attempted inbounds lob at the basket was knocked loose, giving Carthage the win. The lead changed hands nine times over the final 10 minutes of the game.

Elmhurst shot 45.5 percent (20-of-44) from the floor, but only 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from downtown. The Bluejays hit 24-of-28 free throws (85.7 percent) and also outrebounded Carthage 34-28.
Wuest led Elmhurst in the loss with 17 points, shooting 6-of-9 from the field. Nixon recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds while Bryant Ackerman scored 10, all in the second half. Erik Crittenden came off the bench to score nine while Brandon Schwebke totaled seven.

Carthage shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor, but the difference proved to be from beyond the arc, as the Red Men knocked down 8-of-18 attempts (44.4 percent).

Ellis Matthews led the way with 17 points and six rebounds while Logan totaled seven points and 10 assists. Cameron Van Wyk chipped in with 10 points while Valentine scored 13.
 

Elmhurst travels to ninth-ranked North Central College on Saturday, January 17.
