FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Jordan Johnson's jumper with 11 seconds left in double overtime gave the Wesley College men's basketball team a 90-89 victory at Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Center.  The Wolverines, who overcame a 21 point deficit to force overtime, improve to 6-7 on the year and 4-2 in the Capital Athletic Conference while the Eagles move to 1-12 overall and 1-5 in the CAC.

Johnson finished with 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting as all five starters were in double figures, led by Quincy Pettiford's season-high 21 points.  AJ Tilghman added 17 while Wayne Lennon and Anthony Bowers recorded 12 points each.

Trailing 89-88 with 23 seconds left after Mary Washington's Eric Shaw made 1-of-2 free throws, Johnson buried a shot in the lane over the defender to give the Wolverines back the lead.  The Eagles had a pair of chances to take the lead but came up short.

Wesley held a five point lead early in second extra session after Pettiford buried a triple from the corner with two ticks left to force double overtime.  The teams traded leads early in the second overtime but with the Eagles ahead by one, Tilghman, Bowers and Pettiford made three-straight layups to give the Wolverines its largest lead of the game at 88-83 with 2:18 left in the period.

Mary Washington made six unanswered free throws to retake the lead before Johnson's game-winner as the Eagles made just one shot from the field in the second overtime. UMW only converted on two shots from the field in the first overtime as well.

The Wolverines fell behind by 46-25 with 2:00 left in the first half following a jumper by Shaw who led all players with 27 points.  Pettiford answered with a jumper and JW Lawson made a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 17 but Isaac Blue made a layup just before the buzzer to give the Eagles a 48-29 going into the break.

An 11-2 run by Wesley to open the second half quickly cut the Mary Washington to ten points with 17:00 left in regulation and the lead slowly evaporated until Tilghman's jumper with 1:32 remaining tied the score at 65.

Shaw answered with a layup before Tilghman sunk a pair of free throws with 28 seconds remaining to send the game into the first overtime.  Like the second overtime, Wesley got out to a five-point lead in the first extra session but an old-fashioned three-point play by Ty Thurston followed by a triple by Taylor Johnson gave Mary Washington the 76-75 advantage with 1:04 left. Johnson later made a free throw with 20 seconds remaining in the frame but sunk two more after Tilghman drained 1-of-2 to extend the Eagles' lead to 79-76 before Pettiford's game-tying three.    

Wesley shot an impressive 51.5% from the field compared to just 40.6% for the Eagles who took advantage of the free throw situation, sinking 26-of-34 (76.5%) compared to just 15-of-23 (65.2%) for the Wolverines. The teams combined for 52 turnovers with Wesley forcing 23 Eagles turnovers which turned into 24 Wolverines points.

Wesley hosts a pair of CAC games next week, starting with Penn State Harrisburg at 8 pm on Wednesday, January 14.
