MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team scored a 73-57 decision at Wisconsin Lutheran on Wednesday, giving head coach Keith Bunkenburg his 300th career win.
Benedictine took the lead on a layup from Adam Reynolds with 17:28 to play in the opening half at 6-4 and did not trail again. The basket was part of a 12-0 run that saw Benedictine grab a 14-4 edge on a three from Michael Blaszczyk with 14:20 left. Tim McGinty knocked home a pair of free throws with 7:34 remaining to extend the lead to 25-9. Wisconsin Lutheran cut the margin in half, but Benedictine held a 36-26 lead at the half.
The hosts hung around in the second half. Tim Reamer converted on a basket with 7:51 left to put Benedictine ahead 58-47. Wisconsin Lutheran responded with seven consecutive points, clawing to within 58-54 at the 5:13 mark. Benedictine allowed just three points the rest of the way, tallying eight points in the final minute to account for the final margin.
Benedictine finished the contest with a 47-27 advantage on the glass, dominating the team NACC leaders in rebound margin. The Eagles, who tallied 20 second-chance points, scored 21 points at the free throw line and shot 43.4 percent from the field for the contest. Blaszczyk carded a double-double, his first of the year, with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The sophomore, one of four players to reach double figures, hit three triples. Reamer notched 14 off the bench while Reynolds recorded a season best 11 and John Dodson contributed 10.
Bunkenburg is in his 20th season as the head coach at his alma mater and is a member of the Benedictine Hall of Fame. Bunkenburg has guided Benedictine to four 20-win seasons and five NCAA Tournament appearances. A native of Chicago, Bunkenburg is also an assistant director of athletics at Benedictine and served as an assistant for five years before taking over the reigns in 1995.
Benedictine (8-5, 6-2 NACC) returns to action at home on Saturday afternoon against Concordia Wisconsin at 4:15 p.m.
