Brooklyn, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team used a big second half to erase a seven-point halftime deficit en route to its 75-63 victory on Tuesday night at the West Quad Center against City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) rival York College.
With the win, the Bulldogs improve to 11-2 overall on the season and 5-1 in the CUNYAC; while the Cardinals drop to 8-5 overall on the year and 3-2 in conference play.
Junior Lorenzo Williams led BC with 27 points and 13 rebounds, both game-highs, to register the double-double. Classmate Egzon Gjonbalaj added 19 points, while junior Jamel Gist finished the night with nine points, nine rebounds and five assists. Senior Enees Nikovic chipped in with eight points, all in the second half.
The Bulldogs controlled the glass, out-rebounding the Cardinals 42-30, which led to a 15-6 edge in second chance points for the home team.
York was led by Omar St. John's team-leading 15 points (13 in the first half), while Cyril Reid added 10. Ryan St. John netted eight points coming off the bench, while Jaron Williams pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
The visitors would take a 36-29 halftime advantage on the strength of its solid shooting performance that saw the Cardinals shoot 48.3% (14-for-29) from the field, including 46.7% (6-for-13) from three. Williams helped carry Brooklyn's offensive load in the opening half, scoring 15 of his game-high 27 points in the first period, to help keep the home team in the game, as the teams would combine for four ties and six lead changes in the half. York would lead by as many as nine, 36-27, on a three-pointer from Devonnie Edwards at the 3:14 mark of the first stanza.
The second half would see the Bulldogs turn the tables on the Cardinals, using a 14-2 run through the first four minutes of the second period, to go ahead by five, 43-38, with 15:53 remaining in the game. Brooklyn would keep York at bay the rest of the way, eventually ballooning its lead to as many as 12 on a number of occasions.
BC shot an impressive 53.6% (15-for-28) from the field in the second half, while holding York to just 31% (9-for-29) shooting from the field, as the Bulldogs would outscore the Cardinals 46-27 in the second half en route to their 75-63 come-from-behind victory.
Free throws played a key role to the Brooklyn win, as the Bulldogs went to the line 26 times on the night, converting 16 (61.5%). York shot just 53.8% (7-for-13) from the charity stripe.
The Bulldogs return to action this Thursday, January 8th, as Brooklyn will host St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) in a battle for borough bragging rights. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm at the West Quad Center. The Bulldogs will look to improve on their 4-0 record at home and 6-1 non-conference record.
