After having a successful trip to Wisconsin Dells, the Yellowjackets returned to their home court Saturday afternoon, looking to pick up a big victory in WIAC play against UW-Oshkosh. Oshkosh has been an improving team over the past two seasons because their defense has been very good. On the other hand, the Yellowjackets have an explosive offense, and it has been that way since Paul Eberhardt took over the program in 2012. Unfortunately, Oshkosh took the sting out of the Yellowjackets as Superior lost a close game, 61-54.
Foul trouble hindered the Yellowjacket attack, as Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) and Johnquez Brooks (North Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) were in foul trouble for seemingly the entire game. The Yellowjackets had trouble getting going in the first half, scoring only 18 points in the half. After a Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) free-throw at the 5:19 mark of the half, Superior went the rest of the half without a basket, trailing by a score of 25-18 at the break.
In the second half, Oshkosh started to put some distance between itself and Superior. They got the lead up to nine points on a three-point by Alex Olson, then to 12 points on a jumper by Taylor Jansen. The lead grew to 14 points, twice, before Superior started to claw its way back into the game. Down 44-30, Superior went on a quick 5-0 burst to cut the deficit to single digits. With just under four minutes left in the game, Superior trailed by eight points. After a jumper by Brooks, the lead was down to six.
The teams traded points for the next two minutes. Then with 1:59 remaining and Superior down six, Superior forced Oshkosh into a five-second violation giving them the ball back. Superior caught a huge break. Then, John Denny (Luck, Wis./Luck) was fouled and sent to the line for two shots. After making both, Superior trailed by four points. After Oshkosh missed a layup, Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) was fouled and hit two free-throws to bring the Yellowjackets to within two points. Unfortunately, Superior had to play the foul-game and Oshkosh didn't miss their free-throws when it mattered and they were able to escape Superior with the victory.
Superior struggled from the three-point line, shooting 3-of-22 from outside. Inside the three-point line was much better, as the Yellowjackets went 16-of-49. Oshkosh attempted 37 free-throws, making 26. Lindblom was limited to just nine minutes because of the aforementioned foul trouble, eventually fouling out midway through the second half and finishing with just six points. Ty Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) led the Yellowjackets with 17 points and Schradle finished with 12. Brooks had seven assists.
Olson led Oshkosh with 22 points.
With the loss, Superior drops to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in WIAC play. They'll continue conference action on Wednesday when they travel to UW-Whitewater to take on the Warhawks.
