More news about: UW-Superior

After two losses n a row to open the conference schedule, the Yellowjacket men's basketball team felt what it was like to get one in the win column Wednesday night. Superior traveled to Eau Claire to battle the Blugolds, a team the Yellowjackets have beaten four times a in row since former coach Matt Siverling left Superior for Eau Claire two years ago. The Yellowjackets extended that streak to five wins in a row Wednesday, with a 67-58 victory.

Eau Claire's Lewis Mau started the scoring by hitting a jumper, but Superior's Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) would score the team's first 12 points of the game to help Superior to an early 12-7 lead. Lindblom went 5-for-5 from the field in the first half. Eau Claire regained the lead, 17-15, on a lay-up by Kurtis Moody, but Superior would quickly regain the lead on a lay-up by Caleb Burch (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) and two free-throws from Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton). Superior extended its lead to six points, 32-26, with six seconds remaining in the half on a three-pointer from Cole Minnich (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Champlin Park).

Superior would hold their largest lead, eight points, with 18:39 remaining in the second half at 36-28. Superior would manage to hold the lead for the entire second half, despite Eau Claire threatening the Yellowjackets late in the contest. With four minutes remaining, the Blugolds' George Diekelman hit a three-pointer to bring the Eau Claire within two points at 53-51. A timeout by coach Paul Eberhardt was exactly what Superior needed as they were able to settle down and take back control of the game. Ty Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) went 5-of-6 from the free-throw line in the late stages to put the game on ice and send the Blugolds to 0-3 in the conference.

Lindblom led the charge for Superior with 22 points. Ketz finished 15 points and Johnquez Brooks (North Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) had 10 points.

Tyson Kailen, the brother of Yellowjacket freshman Nate Kailen, finished with 16 points.

After allowing Stevens Point to shoot over 66% Saturday, Superior held the Blugolds to 36.8% from the field, and outscored Eau Claire by 13 points from the free-throw line (20-7). Superior didn't shoot well themselves (38.9%), but they committed only four turnovers the entire game, a season-low. They scored 18 points off of 11 Eau Claire turnovers.

With the victory, Superior will head into a 19-day long break before their next game. Superior (5-5, 1-2 WIAC) will be back in action on the 29th of December when they take on Coe College in Wisconsin Dells. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
