Yellowjackets Take Down Saints

More news about: UW-Superior

After escaping with a 71-63 victory last night, the Yellowjacket men's basketball team took the court again Sunday evening against Twin Ports rival St. Scholastica in a rematch of the season opener that took place two weeks ago at St. Scholastica, when the Yellowjackets escaped with a 83-79 victory two Sunday's ago. However, this time, the Yellowjackets made sure the final score, and the game as a whole, weren't close. The Yellowjackets steamrolled the Saints, 96-62, on Sunday in a game that featured strong performances by several Yellowjackets.

The Yellowjackets tweaked their starting lineup, starting junior forward Taylor Mattison (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake-Willow River) in place of senior point guard Johnquez Brooks (North Las Vegas, Nev./Valley). The move paid off for both players. Mattison provided great hustle and effort on both offense and defense, as he finished with seven points and six rebounds. Brooks, meanwhile, provided 25 points off the bench for the Yellowjackets on 7-of-11 shooting and 9-of-12 from the line.

The Yellowjackets got off to a good start as Mattison drilled a three-pointer to open the scoring. Later, a Brooks lay-up made it 15-4. Another three by Mattison pushed the Yellowjackets lead 13 points and forced the Saints to call a timeout with 8:41 left in the first half. Two free-throws by Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) pushed the lead to 14 with just under five minutes to play in the half, 30-16. The Yellowjackets built the lead up to 17 points with just over two minutes remaining in the half, but the Saints rallied and closed the gap, as they finished the half on a 8-3 run to pull to within 12 points at 39-27.

The second half was all Superior. Superior poured in 57 second half points and shot 19-of-32 from the field, including 9-of-15 from the three-point line. Brooks led the charge, scoring 14 points in 13 second half minutes.

For the game, Superior forced the Saints into 20 turnovers. The Yellowjackest turned those 20 turnovers in 27 points. Superior also had a season-high 41 bench points and, at one point, held a 36 point lead. Five Superior players scored in double-figures. Besides Brooks' 25 points, Brian Lindblom (Spooner, Wis./Spooner) added 15, Schradle had 12, Caleb Burch (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) had 11, and Ty Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) had 10.

Jake Naslund led the Saints with 15 points.

With the two victories this weekend, Superior moves to 4-3 overall on the season with a big conference game looming Wednesday against UW-River Falls. The game will be played at The Mertz and tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
