Mount Saint Vincent Comes Up Short Against York

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team returned to action on Monday night, suffering a tough 71-66 non-conference loss to visiting York. Senior Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) led the team with 14 points, while freshman Ammad Alkhulaidi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recorded his team leading third double-double of the season.

 

Mount Saint Vincent never led in the game and found itself trailing 23-13 after a Ryan St. John conversion for the Cardinals with 9:35 left before halftime. The York lead would grow to a half-high 15 points with 6:57 left in the period when St. John buried a three-pointer to push the visitors in front 28-13.

 

The Dolphins would get the lead down to eight points on a Kyle Beckmann (New City, N.Y.) three-pointer but went to the locker room trailing 39-29. York outscored the Mount by eight in the paint before halftime. The Cardinals shot 45.7-percent from the field in the opening stanza, while Beckmann led all scorers with nine points after going 3-for-6 from behind the arc.

 

York would not let the Mount closer than eight points coming out of halftime until the Dolphins strung together a 17-4 run to knot the score at 56-56 with 7:32 left in regulation time. The Dolphins held York to 1-for-8 shooting over the six minute stretch and converted on seven of its 10 chances. Johnson was one of six Dolphins to score in the run, netting five points.

 

The Dolphins would tie the score one other time in the game, but would not be able to pull in front in the game. The Cardinals would spread its lead to six points three times over the final three minutes and would not let the Mount closer than two points in the last 1:16 of the tilt.

 

Mount Saint Vincent shot just shy of 54-percent in the second half on Monday, but finished at 40.7-percent for the game. The Dolphins knocked in 10 three-point field goals in the tilt and went 8-for-12 from the free-throw line. York converted three more field goal attempts in the game and outscored the Mount 16-7 on points off of turnovers.

 

Johnson finished the game 4-for-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 from the three-point range in the game on his way to netting double-figures for the sixth time in eight games this season. He added five rebounds and an assist for the Dolphins.

 

Senior James Zuccaro (Gilbert, Ariz.) rounded out the night with 11 points and three rebounds, while Alkhulaidi closed the night with 10 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Alkhulaidi went 4-for-7 from the floor and led the team with three assists.

 

York was paced by 20 points from Franklin Green who went 8-for-10 from the floor. Jaron Williams posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds and Cyril Reid closed the night with 12 points and six rebounds. Du'Quan Lawson led all players in the game with eight assists.

 

Monday's loss is the second straight for the Dolphins after winning the first six games of the season. At 6-2, the Mount will be back in action on Saturday when it welcomes Farmingdale State to the Peter Jay Sharp Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
