HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. (Dec. 18, 2014) – A layup by sophomore Brody Stone as time expired gave the Sewanee men's basketball team a 66-64 victory over Keystone during day one action of the Luck Stone Holiday Tournament hosted by Hampden-Sydney College.
The Tigers have now won two straight games and three of their last four contests. Sewanee will now take on host Hampden-Sydney in Friday's Championship match at 3:00 p.m. (EST).
The game was close throughout. Early on, Sewanee held a 16-10 lead with 12:29 left in the first half. Eventually Keystone would tie the contest at 16-16 when James Cooper connected on a three with 11:57 left.
Both teams would continue to trade scores the final 10 minutes of the first half. Sewanee stretched its lead to seven, 36-29, with Jorden Williams made a three. However, Keystone answered back with an 8-0 run.
The Tigers would eventually lead by two at halftime, as Marcellus Caldwell made a pair of free throws right before the break.
Out of the locker room, both remained deadlocked. Sewanee and Keystone traded the lead nine times through the opening six minutes of the second half. Keystone would eventually pull ahead by four, 59-55, after a pair of Duncan Lunsford free throws.
Sewanee responded back with a quick 7-0 run to retake the lead at 62-59.
That would set up the drama down the stretch. With 1:06 left, Miles Dargan was fouled on a three-point shot. Dargan then made all three ensuing free throws to tie the contest at 62.
Sewanee answered right back when Stone hit a layup on the Tigers' next possession.
Lunsford then hit a layup for Keystone with 30 seconds to play.
After a timeout by head coach Bubba Smith, Caldwell went to the line after a foul with seconds remaining. The senior captain missed the first shot and then followed with another miss on the second attempt. However, Stone grabbed the rebound and quickly hit the game-winning shot as the clock hit zero.
Williams paced Sewanee with 23 points while Keshonn Carter added 15 points and seven rebounds. Despite missing the final two free throws, Caldwell finished with seven points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
As a team, Sewanee shot 40.7 percent from the field. That included a 31.8 percent clip from beyond the arc.
Lunsford led Keystone with a game-high 24 points. Fellow guard Dargan also finished in double figures with 10 points.
