Devils Win Opener 90-59 at Salisbury Tournament

(Salisbury, Md.) – The #14-ranked Dickinson men's basketball team opened the season with a decisive, 90-59, victory over Valley Forge Christian in the first round of the Salisbury University Optimist Tournament.

 

Junior guard Brandon Angradi opened the season with a three-pointer and the Devils were off and running.

 

Dickinson built a five-point lead, midway through the first half, but Valley Forge would answer, taking a five-point lead of their own with just over six minutes remaining in the half.

 

The Red Devils closed out the half with a 20-3 run to pull in front, 42-30 at the break. Dickinson outscored the Patriots 26-12 in the paint, and 12-0 on fast-break points in the first half.

 

An 11-5 start put Dickinson out in front, 53-35, just three minutes into the second half. That run would stretch to 22-8 as first-year Justus Melton completed a three-point play to make the score, 64-38, with 12:47 to play in the game.

 

The Devils continued to roll, en route to a 90-59 finish. Four players reached double-figures in a balanced attack for Dickinson. Steve Collins led the way with 15 points, four rebounds and two assists while Gerry Wixted tallied 13 points, nine rebounds and four assists.

 

Melton finished with 11 points and Angradi reached double-digits with 10. The Devils hit a remarkable 59.6 percent of their shots from the floor and knocked-down 17-of-21 free throws on the night. Dickinson held a 44-20 advantage on the boards while combining for 21 assists on 34 field-goals.

 

The Red Devils will face host Salisbury in the championship game on Sunday as the Seagulls held off Bryn Athyn, 78-72 in their first round match-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
