Mariners Fall Short Against Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy (1-6) fell to tough NESCAC opponent Bowdoin College (5-3) 71-49 on Tuesday night. 

Nick Holt (Ellsworth, Maine) led the Mariners with 15 points, on five three-pointers, while adding a rebound and a steal. Freshman Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine) added nine points, five rebounds, two assists, and a steal, whileZachary Radcliffe (Rumford, Maine) and Brendan Newcomb (Holden, Maine) added eight points apiece.

The Polar Bears jumped out to an early 7-0 lead before the Mariners got on the board with a Newcomb jumper. Maine Maritime stayed within shouting distance, cutting the Bowdoin lead to 15-10 following a three-pointer by Radcliffe midway through the period. Bowdoin used a 12-point run to build a 29-15 lead, and another seven-point run to close out the first half with a 36-15 lead.

Maine Maritime came out fighting in the second half, outscoring the Polar Bears 15-7 to close the gap to 43-30, but Bowdoin overpowered the Mariners taking the 71-49 victory.

Keegan Pieri and John Swords each grabbed double-doubles for Bowdoin. Pieri ended the night with a game-high 27 points, 10 rebounds, and two assists, while Swords added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The Mariners return to action this Friday when they host Castleton at 7:30 PM, and Green Mountain on Saturday at 3:00 PM for a pair of conference games.
