LA CROSSE, Wis. -- Despite shooting a season-low 38 percent from the floor, the University of Wisconsin-Platteville men's basketball team came out with a 57-56 victory at UW-La Crosse in the Pioneers' first road game of the season on Wednesday in Mitchell Hall.
The Pioneers made just 20-52 (38.5%), but the Eagles struggle shooting as well, making just 37.5 percent (21-56).
Freshman Matt Oestreich and senior Jim Stocki each netted 14 points, while Jake Manning added 11 points.
The Pioneers managed to take a 29-17 lead with five minutes left in the half, but the Eagles closed the period with a 11-0 run to make it a one-point game, 29-28, at intermission.
UW-Platteville never allowed UWL to take the lead, and led by as many as eight, 46-38, with just over nine minutes to play. Eagles made it a one-point game four times in the final nine minutes with the last time coming with 54 seconds left to play.
The Pioneers had a chance to put the game way, but missed four free throws in the final 18 seconds. With two seconds left, UWL's Cale Zuiker missed a game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Pioneers travels to UW-Whitewater on Saturday with tip-off set for 7 p.m.
