Dolphins Down Gryphons, Run Winning Streak To Six Games

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team remained unbeaten on the season and pushed its winning streak to six games on Saturday afternoon with a 93-66 conference win over Sarah Lawrence. Three Dolphins scored in double-figures in the game, led by 19 points from senior Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.).

 

After the lead changed hands three times in the opening two minutes on Saturday, Mount Saint Vincent took the lead for good in the game on a James Zuccaro (Gilbert, Ariz.) triple to push the Dolphins in front 8-5 with 17:21 left before halftime.

 

The Dolphins would not get their lead past five points on Saturday until a Kahlil Shorter (Staten Island, N.Y.) bucket gave the Mount a 20-13 lead in the middle stages of the opening period. The basket was part of a 14-2 run over a six minute stretch that saw the Dolphins push in front 28-13 on a Jamir Ferebee (Staten Island, N.Y.) lay-in at the 7:47 mark of the first half.

 

Mount Saint Vincent would not see its advantage drop below 13 points the rest of the day and it ballooned to 30 points after a 26-11 stretch over a 7:09 period in the first half. The Dolphins went into the intermission with a 56-27 advantage after Jesse Regina (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a jumper at the horn to close the opening period.

 

The Mount shot 58.3-percent from the floor over the first 20 minutes and hit on six of its 14 three-point field goal attempts. Johnson scored 16 points before halftime with Ferebee adding 12 points and three assists.

 

Over the first 20 minutes, Mount Saint Vincent outscored Sarah Lawrence 18-8 in the paint and turned 18 Gryphon turnovers in 20 points.

 

Sarah Lawrence would not get any closer than 25 points after halftime on Saturday and the Dolphins spread its lead out to a game-high 41 points twice in the last 11 minutes of regulation time. The Mount added 20 points in the paint in the second half and turned 13 offensive rebounds into 13 second chance points.

 

Mount Saint Vincent finished the game shooting 46.1-percent from the floor on its way to a season-high 93 points. The Dolphins have now posted at least 80 points in all but one game this season. The Dolphins finished with 38 points in the paint in Saturday's win and scored 27 points off of Sarah Lawrence miscues.

 

Johnson rounded out the day shooting 7-for-8 from the floor and 5-for-6 from behind the arc as he scored in double-figures for the fifth straight game. He added three assists and a team-high three steals in the win.

 

Zuccaro continued his strong early season play for the Mount with 15 points on 6-for-7 shooting to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Ferebee closed out the game with 13 points and a team-high four assists for the Dolphins.

 

For the game, Mount Saint Vincent had 14 different players find the scoring column, including freshman Andrew Curiel (Bronx, N.Y.) who scored a career-high seven points and added a career-high seven rebounds. Kevin Martinez (New City, N.Y.) also added a career-high six points for the Mount.

 

Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 6-0 overall on the season and to 2-0 in conference play. The Dolphins will be off until December 13 when they travel to Division I St. Francis Brooklyn. Tip-off with the Terriers is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
