ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) nailed a three-pointer to put the home team ahead for good with 8:15 remaining as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team nipped Lynchburg 53-52 in ODAC action Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets (5-2, 2-0 ODAC) trailed 47-45 before Sullivan's trey put R-MC on top for good. The Yellow Jacket defense held the Hornets (6-1, 1-1 ODAC) to six points over the final 8:30.
Junior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) buried a three-pointer with seven minutes remaining and freshman Rip Engel (New Town, Pa./Life Center Academy) sank a free throw with 6:40 left to give R-MC a 52-47 advantage. Sullivan sank a free throw with 3:44 remaining to give the Yellow Jackets their final point at 53-50. Alex Graves (20 points, 10 rebounds) had a layup with 34 seconds left to pull LC within one. The Hornets missed a potential game-winning jumper with three seconds left as the Yellow Jackets secured the victory.
R-MC scored eight straight points midway through the first half to take its largest lead of 10 points at 19-9 with 9:30 left in the period. LC scored 10 straight to tie the game and closed the half on a 21-3 run to lead 30-23 at intermission.
The Yellow Jackets scored the first nine points of the second stanza to assume a 32-30 lead three minutes into the period. Graves had a layup with 8:40 remaining to give the Hornets their final led at 47-45.
Sullivan, senior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) and sophomore Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) each led the Yellow Jackets with eight points. Sullivan had six rebounds, while senior Evan Jackson (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) paced R-MC with seven boards.
Randolph-Macon breaks for final exams before returning to Crenshaw Gymnasium on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. against nationally-ranked Cabrini.
