Cortland Remains Unbeaten With 75-60 Win vs. Fredonia

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland went on a 24-2 run midway through the first half and the Red Dragons remained unbeaten with a 75-60 victory over visiting Fredonia.

Junior Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) led Cortland (6-0, 2-0 SUNYAC) with 15 points. His 6-of-10 shooting included 3-of-4 from 3-point territory. Senior Lamard Herron (Westbury) bounced back after a scoreless first half to finish with 14 points, six rebounds and five steals. He hit four of his nine 3-pointers.

Also for the Red Dragons, freshman Carrel Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Deer Park (NY)) scored eight points and grabbed four rebounds in 12 minutes and freshman Justin Prendergast (Monroe/Monroe-Woodbury) finished with seven points and six rebounds in 14 minutes. Prendergast went 3-for-3 from the field and Joseph was 3-for-4.

Max Pearce was the lone double-figure scorer for Fredonia (1-4, 0-2 SUNYAC) with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Mike Hilton tallied nine points and Bayron Carter hauled in nine rebounds. The Blue Devils shot 44 percent from the field – 56 percent in the second half – but committed 19 turnovers and allowed 16 Cortland offensive rebounds. Cortland finished at 42 percent from both the field overall and from 3-point range (10-of-24) and had 12 turnovers.

Cortland trailed 14-10 with 12:52 left but rattled off 13 straight points over the next four minutes on two baskets each by Prendergast and T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) and five points from Estarfaa.

Tommie Banks scored for Fredonia at the 7:48 mark, but the Red Dragons scored the next 11 points on baskets by Joseph and Estarfaa, a Paul Burke (Central Valley/Monroe-Woodbury) 3-pointer and two more Joseph hoops to take a 34-16 lead with 3:51 left. Cortland led 39-23 at halftime and by as much as 23 points in the second half.

Cortland takes a break for final exams before returning to action at SUNY Poly (formerly SUNYIT) on Saturday, December 13 at 2 p.m. in a non-league game.
