Brooklyn Holds Off Maritime, 77-63; Extends Win Streak to Seven Straight

Throggs Neck, NY --- The Brooklyn College Men's Basketball team extending its winning streak to seven straight on Thursday night on the road, as the Bulldogs downed the Privateers of SUNY Maritime College by a score of 77-63 at Riesenberg Hall Gym.

With the win, BC improves to 7-1 overall on the season, while Maritime drops to 2-5 overall on the year. Brooklyn is now 3-0 against teams from the Skyline Conference this season, as the Bulldogs have defeated The Sage Colleges, SUNY College at Old Westbury and Maritime. BC is now also 4-1 in true road games this season.

The Bulldogs had all five starters score in double figures led by junior Lorenzo Williams, who finished the night with a team-leading 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Junior Egzon Gjonbalaj and senior Valon Djombalic added 13 points apiece. Gjonbalaj scored all his points in the second half and also grabbed six rebounds, to go with four steals. Senior Jai Kellman chipped in with 12 points and five rebounds, while junior Jamel Gist contributed with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior Nicholas Grasso pulled down seven rebounds coming off the bench to help BC win the battle of the glass, 42-38.

The Privateers were led by Patrick MacDonald's game-high 19 points, to go with seven rebounds. John Liccese was also in double-figure scoring with 16 points to go with four assists, while Isaiah Hayes grabbed seven rebounds to go with seven points.

The first half saw three ties and three lead changes early on. Following a three-pointer from Maritime's T'Vaughn Gibson that put the home team ahead by one, 10-9, at the 15:09 mark of the opening half, the Bulldogs would go on a 9-0 run to take an eight point lead, 18-10, with 9:48 left in the half. Kellman, Williams, Djombalic and sophomore Harry Hazan all contributed to the run.

Brooklyn would go up by as many as 11, 23-12, in the half on a bucket from Hazan at the 8:12 mark, before taking a six-point, 34-28, halftime lead.

The Privateers would start the second half on a 7-2 run to cut its deficit to one, 36-35, with 17:56 left in the game; however, the Bulldogs would hold off Maritime and eventually rebuild its lead back to double figures, 50-39, with 13:05 remaining on the clock. BC would go on to lead by as many as 17 before taking a 14-point, 77-63, victory.

For the game, Brooklyn shot 42.3% (22-for-52) from the field, including 31.3% (5-for-16) from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs also benefited from the free throw line, going 28-for-40 (70.0%) from the charity stripe.

Maritime shot 39.0% (23-for-59) from the field, including 19.0% (4-for-21) from three. The Privateers struggled from the free throw line shooting 54.2% (13-for-24).

Brooklyn will be back in action this Saturday, December 6th, as the Bulldogs will once again hit the road when they return to City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play to take on the Bloodhounds of John Jay College of Criminal Justice.
