Oxy Loses to Bristol in Close Game

LOS ANGELES — Spencer Levy scored 18 points and Andrew Johnson added 17, but the Occidental men's basketball team was unable to hold off Bristol in a 73-67 loss at Rush Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Oxy falls to 3-3 with a prolonged break for final exams and the holidays. The Tigers don't return to action until Dec. 31 when they play St. Joseph's (Me.).

Bristol wins just its second game of the season, improving to 2-5, but the Bears have played a schedule with a handful of NCAA Division I and Division II opponents and have already beaten Cal Lutheran, a SCIAC Tournament team last season with most of its key players back this year.

Johnson and Levy were both efficient from the field, shooting a combined 14 for 24, but as a team Oxy suffered its worst outside shooting game of the season, going just 5 for 20 from beyond the arc. Coming into the game, Oxy was averaging 94 points per game, and hadn't had a game where it made less than 10 three-pointers.

"Our guys played much better than they have so far this year on the defensive end of the floor and we got a lot of the looks we wanted on offense, they just didn't fall tonight," Oxy head coach Brian Newhall said.

Turnovers were the other issue as the Tigers coughed up the ball 20 times.

"Both teams had opportunities to take control of the game down the stretch, but turnovers were an issue," Newhall said. "Hard to beat a good team with 20 turnovers and a poor shooting night."

The lead changed hands five times in the second half and no team pulled ahead by more than six points.

Levy hit one of his two three-pointers with 1:54 left, cutting Bristol's lead to one and Oxy forced a miss 30 seconds later at the other end of the floor. But Levy was whistled for a loose-ball foul on the rebound and Tade Keshishyan made both free throws as Bristol took control for good.

Austin Hawk scored eight points and dished out seven assists, JJ Friedman scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Juwan Rice had nine points and six boards for the Tigers.

Brandon Chavers scored a game-high 21 points and Alex Mendiola added 14 for the Bears.
