William Paterson Men’s Basketball Runs Away from NJCU, 65-52

WAYNE, N.J. – Senior guard Sandy Burgos (Fort Lee, N.J./Fort Lee) scored a game-high 23 points to help lead the William Paterson men's basketball team (5-1, 3-0 NJAC) to a 65-52 victory against visiting New Jersey City (2-4, 1-2 NJAC) Dec. 3.

 

Junior guard Bright Mensah (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) posted 11 tallies and three steals, and junior forward Terik Bridgeman (Harlem, N.Y./Nia Prep) chipped in 10 points and a team-best five rebounds and four blocked shots.

 

The two teams battled back and forth during the first half, with neither side leading by more than six during the opening 20 minutes. WP went 3-for-4 (.750) from the free-throw line during the final minute to forge a 34-34 halftime score.

 

Thirteen unanswered points, including seven off the hot hand of Burgos and four tallies from sophomore guard Turrell McClendon (Piscataway, N.J./Piscataway Tech), put the Pioneers in control at 49-36 with 11:42 to play. WP's lead never dipped below double digits for the remainder of the contest as the Pioneers shot 52.9 (9-17) from the field during the second period while limiting the Gothic Knights to 6-for-27 (.222) shooting.

 

Senior Jamall McDaniel was the only NJCU player in double figures with 10 points. Senior center Eddie Brown posted six tallies and a game-best seven rebounds, and senior forward Neville Joseph had eight points.

 

William Paterson will play at No. 8 Stockton Saturday, Dec. 6, at 3:00 p.m.
