Wickey Becomes 25th Player In Program History To Surpass 1,000 Points In Win

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Joey Flannery (Acton, Mass.) led all scorers with 19 points and classmate Sam Bohmiller (Franklin, Mass.) drilled six three-pointers and scored a career-high 18 points to help Babson College defeat visiting Bowdoin College, 68-48, in non-conference men's basketball action on Monday night at Staake Gymnasium.

With its fourth straight victory, Babson is now 5-1 overall, while Bowdoin suffered its first loss of the year to fall to 4-1.

Bohmiller connected on five first-half trifectas and dished out a career-high four assists for the Beavers. Senior John Wickey (Manchester, N.H.) added 11 points and 11 rebounds, and became the 25th player in program history to surpass 1,000 points on his first hoop of the night. Classmate David Mack (Holden, Mass.) made all three of his field goal attempts and finished with six points and seven boards.

Senior John Swords (Sudbury, Mass.) posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Polar Bears. Classmate Keegan Pieri (Camden, Maine) added 11 points despite struggling through a 3-for-13 night from the floor, and junior Lucas Hausman (Westport, Conn.) chipped in with 10 points.

The Green and White missed nine of its first 11 shots and trailed 6-4 at the 13:44 mark of the opening half before taking the lead for good with a quick 8-0 spurt that was capped by a three-pointer from Bohmiller with 11:46 remaining in the stanza. A trey from Pieri got Bowdoin within 16-13 with 8:44 to go in the period, but the Beavers closed the half with an 18-8 run to build a 14-point lead at the break.

Bohmiller followed a pair of Flannery free throws with a trifecta to put the hosts in front 21-13. Hausman scored on back-to-back trips for the Polar Bears, but Bohmiller made a trio three-pointers over the next five possessions to give Babson a 31-19 lead just 1:42 before halftime. Hausman knocked down two free throws, but another trifecta from Flannery and one free throw from Wickey gave the Green and White a 35-21 lead going to the locker room.

Bowdoin cut its deficit to 13 early in the second half and trailed 47-31 following a traditional three-point play by Pieri before the Beavers put the game out of reach with another 8-0 spurt. Sophomore Matthew Droney (Canton, Mass.) drilled a pair of free throws and then scored in transition before Wickey buried a corner three-pointer and knocked down a free throw to give Babson its largest lead of the night at 55-31 with 11:15 left in the contest.

The Polar Bears closed the gap to 59-42 on a trifecta from senior Bryan Hurley (Watertown, Mass.) with 5:52 remaining, but Bohmiller answered with his final three-pointer of the night on the following possession to put Babson back up 20.

The Green and White shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49) from the floor and finished with a 42-33 edge on the glass. Bowdoin shot just 28.8 percent (15-of-52) from the field and made just four of their 18 three-point attempts.

Babson returns to action on Saturday at 3 p.m. when it hosts Tufts in the opening round of the Big 4 Challenge, while the Polar Bears travel to Bates on Thursday for a 7 p.m. tip-off.

GAME NOTES: Babson is now 16-19 all-time against Bowdoin and snapped a three-game losing streak in the series…Wickey is one of just nine players in program history to surpass 1,000 points and 500 rebounds…he is also one of just two players, along with Zach Etten '09, to score 1,000 points, pull down 500 boards and make at least 100 three-point field goals…the Beavers have now won 14 of their last 17 games at home going back to the start of last season…Babson's 10 three-point field goals on Monday are its most since knocking down 11 treys against MIT on January 22, 2014…the Beavers have won 16 of their last 19 games when outrebounding their opponent going back to December 3, 2013.
