Cardinal Stritch topples UW-Stout in Turkey Shootout championship game

MENOMONIE (November 30, 2014) - Jarvis Ragland (Sr, Milwaukee) scored 20+ points for the second game in a row, but Cardinal Stritch shot 53 percent from the field and 47 percent from downtown on their way to an 87-68 victory over UW-Stout in the final game of the UW-Stout Thanksgiving Turkey Shootout at Johnson Fieldhouse Sunday.

Stout managed to keep the game tight for the first 10 minutes of the contest, but the sharp-shooting Wolves started to pull away late in the first half. Cardinal Stritch shot 60 percent (21-35) from the field and 50 percent (5-10) from three-point range in the first to take a 52-34 lead into the break.

The Blue Devils would trail by at least 18 points for the rest of the game as Cardinal Stritch pushed their lead to as many as 25 points.

For Stout, Ragland had 21 points on 6-of-12 shooting. He also went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe and 1-for-2 from downtown.Brett Ahsenmacher (So, Annandale, Minn.) chipped in seven points and Colton Williams (Fr, Columbia Heights, Minn.) and Jacob Lindgren (Fr, Crystal, Minn.) each had six points coming off the bench for the Blue Devils. John Lahti (Fr, Turtle Lake) led the team with six rebounds, including two on the offensive end, while scoring five points off the bench as well. Reggie Kujak (Jr, Blair) added three blocks and two steals for Stout.

For Cardinal Strich, Tony Smit had a game-high 29 points, going 10-18 from the field and 6-8 from downtown. Smit also had five rebounds, six assists and two steals. Garrett Borgrud added 18 points and seven rebounds while Tyler Semenas had 15 points and seven boards for the Wolves.

Stout was outrebounded by the Wolves, 43-30. As a team, the Blue Devils shot 23-for-58 (39.7 percent) from the field and 6-for-28 (21.4 percent) from beyond the arc. For the game, Cardinal Stritch shot 34-for-64 (53.1 percent) from the field and 10-for-21 (47.6 percent) from downtown. Stout outshot Cardinal Stritch from the charity stripe, going 16-20 (80 percent) from the line compared to 9-19 (47.4 percent) for the Wolves.

Up next, the Blue Devils will head to Mankato, Minn. to take on the Vikings of Bethany Lutheran College on Wedneday, Dec. 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
