ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) led all scorers with 18 points as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team dropped a 76-67 decision to Frostburg State Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Gymnasium.
The Yellow Jackets (3-2) never led in the contest. The Bobcats (3-2) scored the first four points of the game and built a 14-point lead at 24-10 in the first 8:30 of the contest. FSU led 31-18 with just under seven minutes remaining in the period before R-MC ended the half on a 14-3 run to trail 34-32 at the break. Hassell had eight points in the period, while senior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) chipped in seven.
Hassell made a layup and was fouled with 17:44 left in the contest to pull the Yellow Jackets within one at 41-40. Hassell missed the free throw and the Bobcats went on a 13-2 run to take a 54-42 lead with 15 minutes remaining. FSU was up 58-45 with 13:30 left before a 10-2 spurt by the Yellow Jackets made it a five-point contest at 60-55 midway through the period. A 12-2 run by the Bobcats extended the lead to 15 at 72-57 with five minutes remaining on its way to the 76-67 victory.
Hamilton finished with 14 points for the Yellow Jackets.
Breon Powell led FSU with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Randolph-Macon kicks off ODAC play on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. at Virginia Wesleyan.
