CARLISLE, Pa. – Sophomore guard Pete Christ scored a career-high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting and the Gettysburg College men's basketball team upset seventh-ranked Dickinson College 67-61 in a Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball tilt Tuesday evening in the Kline Center.
The Bullets (4-1, 2-0 CC), playing their first road contest of the season, earned their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since their 73-65 victory at No. 23 Franklin & Marshall College in the 2009 Centennial Conference championship game. Gettysburg also earned its first win over a top-10 ranked squad since topping No. 8 Franklin & Marshall 79-69 on Jan. 12, 2002.
Trailing by eight with less than two minutes left, Dickinson (3-1, 1-1 CC) elected to foul and Gettysburg did not attempt a field goal the rest of the way. Though the Bullets twice missed the front of a one-and-one, they converted 10-of-14 at the charity stripe in the final 1:58 to survive a late flurry of Dickinson 3-pointers.
Sophomore forward Tanner Kirkpatrick, playing in his hometown, added 15 points and seven rebounds for Gettysburg while senior guard Sean Gordon dished out eight assists. Junior forward Kevin Gladstone contributed 13 points and six rebounds while freshman forward Cameron Stewart notched a season-high 10 points.
Ted Hinnenkamp led the Red Devils, who reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA Division III Tournament last season, with 18 points and six rebounds while Jon Stenger posted 12 points. Gerry Wixted netted eight points and grabbed 12 rebounds for the hosts.
Dickinson led 12-5 with 8:44 left in the first half before the Bullets heated up, outscoring the Devils 26-10 over the remainder of the period to assume a 31-22 halftime advantage. Five different Bullets scored during the run, which was capped by four consecutive Gettysburg 3-pointers, starting with a Stewart trey that gave the Orange and Blue the lead (22-19) for good. Kirkpatrick and Christ connected from beyond the arc before Stewart struck again, this time with two ticks showing to give the visitors their nine-point edge at the break.
Gettysburg led by as much as 12 (36-24) with 16:16 remaining following a Gordon 3-ball, but the Red Devils immediately climbed back into it with a 7-0 spurt. Dickinson pulled to within two (46-44) with 8:19 left but would get no closer.
Christ nailed a trey with 2:50 remaining to make it 57-46 before Brandon Angradi answered with a triple of his own. Dickinson then began to foul, and a pair of Gladstone free throws with 1:58 made it 59-49. Stenger hit a 3-pointer with 1:47 left, but Dickinson came up empty on its next three possessions, allowing the Bullets to push their lead to 10 again (62-52) when Christ went 2-for-2 at the line with 32 seconds remaining.
Stenger and Hinnenkamp sandwiched a pair of late 3's around a 1-for-2 trip at the stripe for Gladstone to make it 63-58 with 16 seconds left. After Gladstone hit a pair of foul shots, Stenger converted his fourth and final 3-pointer with eight ticks showing to make it 65-61. But Christ settled any doubt when he connected on a pair of foul shots with six seconds left.
Gettysburg takes a week off from competition before returning to Centennial Conference action next Tuesday, when it hosts Johns Hopkins University at 6 p.m.
