Hassell Helps Yellow Jackets Top Tigers in Hoopsville Invitational

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) led all scorers with 17 points as the 11th-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team pounded Wittenberg 70-49 Saturday evening in the Hoopsville National Invitational.

Hassell went 5 for 9 from the floor and 7 for 9 from the free throw line for the Yellow Jackets (3-1).

Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) had 13 points and six rebounds for R-MC. Senior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) and junior Lamont Moore (Waverly, Va./Tidewater Academy) both added 12 points.

R-MC jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead, but the Tigers (0-4) fought back and took a 21-16 advantage midway through the first period. The Yellow Jackets would outscore Wittenberg 19-8 over the next 10 minutes to take a 35-29 advantage at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets started the second stanza on a 17-4 run to extend its lead to 52-33 with 13:30 left in the contest. The lead grew to at least 23 before R-MC posted the 21-point victory.

R-MC held a 35-31 advantage on the boards and committed just eight turnovers.

Randolph-Macon will have its home opener on Sunday, Nov. 30 at 2 p.m. against Frostburg State.
