Altoona, Pa. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team had five players score in double-figures on Sunday on its way to an 81-68 non-conference road win at Penn Stat Altoona. Senior Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) led the offensive charge with 17 points as the Mount posted its third straight win to open the season.
The Dolphins trailed for just 1:43 on Sunday and used a 16-5 run over the final seven minutes of the first half to take a 43-29 lead into the intermission. Freshman Jamir Ferebee (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a pair of three-pointers over the closing run and scored seven of the 16 points with sophomore Kahlil Shorter (Staten Island, N.Y.) adding five points for the Mount.
Mount Saint Vincent shot an efficient 65.4-percent from the floor in the first half, hitting on six of its nine three-point attempts. Ferebee led the Dolphins with nine first half points, with the Dolphins holding a 20-12 edge in paint points.
Coming out of halftime, Mount Saint Vincent would spread its lead to 16 points on a Kyle Beckmann (New City, N.Y.) lay-up and would not let Penn State Altoona get the deficit under 10 points until a Evan Greening conversion with 11:50 left to play that sliced the Mount Saint Vincent lead to 51-43.
The Dolphins would quickly get their lead back to double-figures on a pair of Shorter free-throws and moved the advantage to a game-high 18 points on a James Zuccaro (Gilbert, Ariz.) layup with 8:23 to play in regulation. The Mount Saint Vincent lead would not fall below 10 points the rest of the day and reached the game-high of 18 points twice.
Johnson finished the game 6-for-8 from the floor on his way to a team-high 17 points, knocking down four three-point field goals. He added an assist and a rebound to the winning effort.
Ferebee closed the game with a career-high 16 points, going 5-for-10 from the floor. He added seven rebounds for the Mount. Zuccaro and Ammad Alkhulaidi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each netted 11 points, with Alkhulaidi closing a strong day with six rebounds, three assists and two blocks. Zuccaro paced the team with six assists on the afternoon.
Shorter rounded out the game with a season-high 12 points after going 3-for-6 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. He added two assists and a steal.
Penn State Altoona got a game-high 19 points from Tay Charles and a 14 point, 10 rebound effort from Greening. Javon Wilson chipped in with 12 points and Anton Lucas finished with seven points and a team-high three assists.
Mount Saint Vincent finished the game shooting 51.8-percent overall and an even 40-percent from three-point range. The Dolphins scored 40 paint points in the game and turned 17 Penn State Altoona turnovers in 16 points. Mount Saint Vincent also finished with a season-best nine turnovers.
Sunday's win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to a perfect 3-0 on the season. Next up for the Dolphins is the Skyline Conference opener at Farmingdale State on December 2. Tip-off with the Rams is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
