OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior Joe Hassell (Portsmouth, Va./Indian River) recorded his first double-double of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds as the No. 11 Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outlasted Mary-Hardin Baylor 66-62 in overtime Friday evening in the first round of the Hoopsville National Invitational Classic.
Senior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 48 seconds left in overtime to snap a 62-62 tie. Senior Connor Sullivan (Charlotte, N.C./Providence Day School) had nailed a three-pointer with 3:20 remaining in the extra period to give the Yellow Jackets (2-1) a 62-60 advantage.
The game was tight through the first 12 minutes. R-MC led 16-15 with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half before three-pointers by freshman Rip Engel (New Town, Pa./Life Center Academy) and senior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) gave the Yellow Jackets a 22-15 lead with 4:30 left in the period. Hamilton hit another three with just under two minutes remaining to extend the lead to nine at 30-21 before R-MC took a 30-25 advantage to the locker room at intermission. Hamilton and Hassell both had nine points in the first period, while Hassell pulled down 11 boards.
Sullivan hit a trey midway through the second half to give the Yellow Jackets their largest lead at 52-41. The Crusaders (1-1) closed regulation on a 15-4 run to force overtime at 56-56.
R-MC had four in double figures. Hamilton had 14 off the bench, while Sullivan added 13. Holmes finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Yellow Jackets hit 11 of 28 three-pointers (39.3%) and went 15 of 19 from the free throw line (78.9%).
This was R-MC's second consecutive overtime contest. The Yellow Jackets fell 71-70 at No. 24 Christopher Newport this past Tuesday.
Randolph-Macon will face Wittenberg on Saturday at 8 p.m. on the second day of the Hoopsville National Invitational Classic.
