Herron Pours in 29 as Cortland Defeats Trinity, 72-63, at Cortaca Classic

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Tournament MVP Lamard Herron (Westbury) scored 29 points, 18 in the second half, as Cortland defeated Trinity College of Connecticut, 72-63, during the second day of competition at the Cortaca Classic.

The Red Dragons finished 2-0 at the predetermined tournament and improved to 3-0 on the season. Cortland defeated Farmingdale on Friday, 75-54. Trinity is now 2-2 overall and went 1-1 over the weekend, including a 74-48 win Friday versus Ithaca, while Ithaca also went 1-1 after beating Farmingdale Saturday, 78-62. Friday's games were hosted by Ithaca and Saturday's by Cortland.

Joining Herron on the all-tournament team were Cortland senior Matt McGowan (Lake George), Trinity's Alex Conaway, Ithaca's Keefe Gitto and Farmingdale's Eriq Williams.

Herron finished 9-of-18 from the floor, including 6-of-12 from 3-point range, and hit 5-of-6 free throws. He also recorded four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Shayne Martinez (West Haverstraw/North Rockland) added 11 points on 3-of-3 shooting along with five rebounds.

Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) hit 3-of-5 treys in a 10-point effort and McGowan scored eight points and pulled in four rebounds. Grequan Carter (Queens/Humanities & The Arts) led the team with seven rebounds.

George Papadeas came off the bench to lead the Bantams with 18 points and eight rebounds. He made 8-of-9 field goals and both of his free throws. Papadeas scored 15 of his points in the first half. Jaquann Starks scored 17 points and Conaway finished with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Cortland made 10-of-21 shots from the 3-point line (48 percent) and was 20-of-27 (74 percent) from the foul line. The Red Dragons shot 46 percent overall from the field. Trinity was successful on only 2-of-19 3-pointers (11 percent) and hit 17-of-22 free throws (77 percent). The Bantams connected on 40 percent of their total field-goal tries.

Cortland trailed 8-0 to start the game before going on a 23-4 run over an eight-minute span to take a 23-12 lead with 8:28 remaining in the half. Martinez scored seven points and Herron and McGowan each tallied six points during that stretch.

The Red Dragons led 35-29 at halftime and never trailed in the second half. Trinity, however, was still within five at 52-47 after a Papadeas 3-point play with 10:15 left before Cortland mounted a 9-0 run to push its advantage to 14. The first six points came on the free-throw line – four by Herron and two by Martinez – and Herron hit a 3-pointer to cap the run with 7:52 left.

Cortland grabbed its largest lead at 69-53 with 4:19 left on a Carter layup before the guests made things interesting. The Bantams eventually got to within six at 69-63 on a Conaway 3-point play with 1:05 left, but Cortland scored the final three points on single free throws from James Morales (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane), Carter and Herron.

Cortland is idle until hosting Ithaca on Tuesday, December 2, at 5:30 p.m., with the women's teams to follow at 7:30 p.m.
