(CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky.) – The Thomas More College men's basketball team fell, 69-66, to Brescia University today (Saturday, November 22, 2014) on the second day of the Coach Jim Connor Classic at the Connor Convocation Center in Crestview Hills, Kentucky.
With the loss, the Saints fall to 1-3 and with the win, the Bearcats improve to 4-3.
Thomas More jumped out to a 9-2 lead with 17:34 to play in the first half when senior guard Drew Mumford (Louisville, Ky./Christian Academy) made two free-throws. Brescia answered with an 11-4 run to tie the game at 13-13 when Kyle Nixon made a three-pointer with 13:48 to play in the opening half. The Saints used a 15-7 run capped by a jumper by senior guard Eliot Pipes (Nashville, Tenn./Hillsboro) to build a 28-20 lead with 8:16 to play in the half. The Bearcats responded with a 12-3 run to take a 32-31 lead with 4:38 to play in the opening half when Nixon made a three-pointer. Thomas More closed out the half on an 8-4 run to take a 39-36 lead at halftime when senior forward Jalen Clark (Frankfort, Ky./Western Hills) made one-of-two free-throws with 32-seconds to play in the first half.
Brescia opened the second half on a 13-10 run to tie the game at 49-49 on an Austin Morris jumper with 9:49 to play in the game. Thomas More answered with an 11-9 run to take a 60-58 lead with 4:45 to play in the game when sophomore guard/forward Nate McGovney (Alexandria, Ky./Campbell County) made a lay-up. Brescia closed out the game on an 11-6 run for the 69-66 win.
Clark led all scorers with 17 points and he was joined in double-figures scoring by Mumford with 16, McGovney with 12 and Pipes with 10. Mumford led the Saints on the boards with a game-high-tying six rebounds, while he and sophomore guard Drew Mays (Union, Ky./Ryle) led the team in assists with four each. McGovney led the team in steals with four.
Thomas More returns to action on Tuesday (November 25) when it hosts traditional rival Wilmington College at 7:30 p.m. at the Connor Convocation Center.
