UR Men Win Resler Tourney Sparked by 13-0 Run

Rochester hit three consecutive 3-pointers early in the first half to key a 13-0 surge as the Yellowjackets defeated Utica College, 76-53, in the championship game of the Chuck Resler Tournament at the Louis Alexander Palestra Saturday night.

Mack Montague hit two treys and Tyler Seidman sank one. Sam Borst-Smith made two free throws and Montague finished the burst with a layup for an 18-8 lead with just over 11 minutes left in the first half.

Montague led all scorers with 17 points. Seidman finished with 15 points, all on three-point shots. Jared Seltzer added 11 points and seven rebounds for Rochester (3-0).

Aaron Nevins led Utica (1-2) with 16 points. Conor Maisch scored 11 points. The Pioneers did not have another player with at least six points.

Rochester dominated in the paint, outscoring Utica, 28-14. The Yellowjackets scored 17 points after 11 Utica turnovers. Rochester committed nine turnovers, leading to seven Utica points.

After the 13-0 run, the Pioneers cut it below 10 just twice. Griffin Kelly made a layup to make it 18-10. The lead stretched back out to 12 before Ian Henderson made a three-pointer to trim it to 29-20 with 4:11 left. Seidman ansdwered with a trey and the Yellowjackets closed the half on an 8-4 run to lead, 37-24. In the second half, the Yellowjackets hit 52% from the floor (16 of 31) to pull away. Utica was 10 of 27 from the floor in the second half with half the made shots coming outside the line.

The All-Tournament Team was comprised of Montague, Maisch, Nevins, Jaren Yaing of Gordon (Mass.), and Taylor Sowah of New Paltz. The MVP was Kevin Sheehy of Rochester. He had six points, four rebounds, nine assists, and two steals in the championship game. The nine assists match his career high.
