ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Junior forward Kevin Roach (Levittown, N.Y./MacArthur) hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 22 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime, but the State University of New York at New Paltz men's basketball team was unable to hang on in the extra session in a 78-73 loss to Gordon College in the consolation game of the Chuck Resler Tournament on Saturday afternoon at the University of Rochester's Louis Alexander Palestra.

For his efforts across both games of the Chuck Resler Tournament, senior guard/forward Taylor Sowah (Bronx, N.Y./Miller Place) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Hawks continued to build on the momentum they gained off that game-tying trey early in the overtime period, jumping out to a 71-67 lead with 3:55 to go after a pair of made free throws by Roach. A 5-0 Gordon run, however, gave the Fighting Scots a 72-71 lead, and though Roach once again gave the Hawks the advantage off two free throws, Gordon scored the final six points of the contest to pull out the overtime win.

New Paltz drops to 0-4 with the loss and hosts Hudson Valley rival Mount Saint Mary College on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 5 p.m. in its final home game of the 2014 calendar year. Gordon rises to 1-2 with the win and hosts Salem State University on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 7:30 p.m.

A see-saw battle ensued early in the first half, as both teams stayed within three points of each other until the Hawks went on a 5-0 run that was capped off by two made foul shots by senior guard/forward Andrew Seniuk(Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) with 12:20 to go in the period. The tables turned minutes later, though, with Gordon going on a 6-0 spurt to take a 25-22 lead with 7:46 left in the half.

A four-point Fighting Scot lead with 2:34 left in regulation evaporated after a Roach free throw and a 3-pointer by sophomore guard/forward Joe Tino (Hastings-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hastings), and the Hawks ended up closing the half on a 6-0 run to take a 44-40 advantage into the locker rooms.

New Paltz held a lead for the first 7:52 of the second half until Gordon's freshman guard Jaren Yang—who also was named to the All-Tournament Team—capped off a 6-0 Fighting Scot run to hand Gordon a 51-50 edge. After back-and-forth play, senior guard/forward R.J. Rosa (North Branch, N.Y./Sullivan West) put the Hawks up, 62-58, with 4:47 remaining in regulation, but four Fighting Scot free throws knotted the score at 62-all. In fact, Gordon's push to force overtime came on the strength of free throws, as all eight of its final points of the second half came from the charity stripe.

Gordon shot 43.1 percent (28-of-65) from the field for the game and knocked down 70.8 percent (17-of-24) of its free throws, including an 81.8 percent (9-of-11) mark in the second half. While the Fighting Scots held a 53-34 edge in rebounds, New Paltz did force Gordon into 17 turnovers and scored 19 points off them. The Hawks, meanwhile, gave the ball away only seven times all game.

Roach led the Hawk attack with a game-high 20 points, while Sowah, Seniuk and Rosa netted 17, 13 and 11 points, respectively. Roach provided the team-high in rebounds with eight, while sophomore center Taylor Mulvey(Rotterdam, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and freshman guard/forward Malik Seelal (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) handed out four assists apiece. Defensively, Roach, Sowah, Rosa and Mulvey all came up with three steals.

Gordon relied on balanced scoring, as its entire starting five notched double-digit totals in points. Senior forward Hans Miersma led the way with 15 points and added 11 rebounds to complete a double-double, while Yang, senior guard Taylor Bajema and sophomore forward Dominic Paradis all scored 12 points. Senior forward Jason Dempsey netted 10 points to round out the Fighting Scots' double-digit scorers. Miersma paced Gordon's interior defense with three blocks.
